Day 106 - Honors Writing

Good morning class! Today is Monday, February 28, 2011. This morning when we came in, we went through our usual morning routine, and at 9:05, we went to music. In music, we ran over the “Bullies Anonymous” script, and the songs. We then came back, got the net books, and worked on our SS CBA’s until break. When we came back, we worked on “The Girl Who Married the Moon” questions and answers. If we were done, we could play around on “Type2Learn 4”. Then 12:10 came and we went to lunch.

When we came back, at 1:15 we had the Honor’s writing test for some students. The other students reviewed for the upcoming math unit test. At around 2:50 we did book clubs until 3:20. We then wrote down homework, did PSV, and left. Here’s the homework:

Day 105 - Day After Our Mini-Break

Hello Mr. Steele’s class! Today is Friday, February 25, 2011, and the last day of the week. I hope you all enjoyed your mini-break due to a giant snowstorm on Wednesday and Thursday. This morning, we went through our morning routine, and at 9:15, we went to library. We have a new book report on our favorite author. The librarian passed out a handout that explained what was expected in the book report, things to think about and include in the book report, and note pages to write down our thoughts and plan our report (for the layout of the report). We also had time to check out books. When we came back at about 9:55, we went on to “Mystery Class” with our groups. We then went onto BBC, a website all about fossils.

Three things I learned are; The first thing I learned was in order to make a fossil you have to get buried immediately to keep it safe from animals, critters, and the weather, but it also has to be around rock so it will be preserved. An ideal place to make a fossil is somewhere muddy, like a river or a creek, because they will sink or be covered up by sediment which will keep animals from being eaten by small critters or animals. It will also prevent the air from making them rot. Lakes and oceans are also an ideal place for forming a fossil for similar reasons. The second thing I learned is how fossils are formed. The fleshy part of the animal can be eaten, leaving the bone and teeth behind. The skeleton is then buried beneath mew layers of sediment, but this will only happen where the ground is continually sinking. Because of the weight of the layers above, the pressure on the lower levels increases. The pressure fuses the rock together forming sedimentary rock. Other hard body parts may stay intact and encased in the rock. Then the ground slowly shifts up, taking with it the remains of the animal. Sometimes though, ground water is acidic and dissolves the skeleton, and if the rock is solid enough, a cavity is formed in the shape of the animal's skeleton, which is called a mold. Then the ground water can seep into the mold with minerals and fills, therefore making a mold cast. Then the ground moves up again, taking the fossil with it. Sometimes though, the skeleton goes too deep and is crushed, or doesn't go deep enough and is scattered. It just depends. The third thing I learned is foot prints can tell us how fast an animal moved, how it behaved, and more. We then went on to work on ‘The Girl Who Married the Moon”. At 12:10, we went to lunch.

When we came back, we did lesson 5.2 in math. We were trying to find out how much money we could spend for lunch, with tax and tip, but without going over a set amount. We then had “Steps to Respect” with Mr. B. After we finished with him, we finished our math lesson and went on to the science article on fossils in our “Earth History Resources” book. The article covered index fossils, and the periods the fossils were placed. It even covered radioactive decay and how we can measure the earth by measuring how much lead and uranium is in that rock layer. One question to Google “Where does uranium come from? Then we stopped to do jobs and PSV. Then we left. Enjoy your weekend! Here’s the homework:

Day 104- Type2Learn 4

Good morning! I hope you all had a splendid mid-winter break. Today is Tuesday, February 22, 2011. This morning, we came in and went through our morning routine. At 9:05, we went to P.E. In P.E., we did some more tennis. We got in four lines, and hit a spinner or a foam ball back and forth, all the while counting how many times we could hit it without it becoming a dead ball. When we got back, we got our netbooks out and worked on “Mystery Class”. Once we were done, we got to work on our SS CBA for about 15-20 minutes. Our teacher then handed us some strips of paper that had our username and password to get onto Type2Learn 4. Then we had break at our usual time. After break, we got to create our own avatar on a communicator site (You can access it from mrsteelesclass.org). Soon it was 12:10, and we put our netbooks away and went out to recess.

When we came back, we started 5.1 in math. Today we were finding percent discounts. You put the discount over the original price, simplify, and then convert into a percent (0.75$ off any two spiral notebooks- Regular price: $3.00, With coupon: $2.25. You put the discount on the top of the fraction (75/?), and you put the original price on the bottom, so it turns out to be 75/300. You then simplify it and convert it to a percent. So 75/300 is 25/100 or 25 %.) Once we finished, we did a class science read from our “Earth History Resources” book on fossils. Turns out, the word fossil comes from the Latin verb “to dig.” We stopped about halfway through to do about 10 minutes worth of book clubs, and then we packed up and left. Here’s the homework for tonight:

Day 103- Collaborating on OneNote

Hello students! Today is Wednesday, February 16, 2011. Today we had music at 9:05, so we came in and unpacked quickly, and then ran down and went to specialists. When we got there, we handed out our “Bullies Anonymous” scripts. We went over part of the script, and went over the songs. At 9:45, we left and went to get our netbooks. Once we were all seated in the classroom and we had our laptops booted, we got onto Microsoft OneNote and collaborated on the three ancient Chinese philosophies, Legalism, Daoism, and Confucianism. Then we had break at our usual time. After break, we got to work on our SS CBA paragraphs. At 11:45, we worked on “The Girl Who Married the Moon” questions (Houghton Mifflin). 12:10 came and we went out to recess and lunch.

When we came back, we did a “math checkup” (It was really a test). Then at about 1:55, we did PSV and left. Have a great mid-winter break! Here’s the homework:

Day 102- Our First Paragraph For Our Social Studies CBA

Good morning! Today is Tuesday, February 15, 2011. This morning, we came in and did our normal routine, unpacking, putting our stuff in our desks, and getting started on Word of the Day and Calendar Math. At 9:05, we went to P.E. In PE, we did a tennis game. We get in a line on the wall. Then, two people go up at a time to have a spinner ball pitched to you. If you hit it in bounds, and it bounces twice without someone catching it, you can get back in line, but if someone catches it, then they get in and you go out to try and catch a ball. At 9:45, we went back and our teacher showed us a chat program where we could talk to him to get help on work, and to collaborate with other students on work and class projects. We then worked on our SS CBA. We got to the point where we did our introductory paragraph and did our title. Then, 12:10 came, and we went out for lunch and recess.

When we came back, we started a Math Cheat sheet. On one side we did generic math, and on the other side we reserved it just for geometry. When we got done, we did appointment wheels and worked on 4.3. After that, we got into book club groups and read our books. Then at 3:10, we watched a science video that was all about; magma, the continents, tectonic plates, volcanic eruptions, and earthquakes. Scientists believe that the continents were once joined, because they found two almost identical fossils on two different continents. We stopped the movie at 3:25 to do jobs and PSV. Then we all went home. Here’s tonight’s homework:

Day 101 - Valentine’s Day

Hello Mr. Steele’s class! Today is February 14, 2011, and it’s Valentine’s Day! This morning, we came in, unpacked, and put all our goodies on the back tables for our party this afternoon. Then we lined up for music. In music, we went over the songs that needed the most work. After that, we did “Rhythm Bingo”. We then came back, and got our netbooks out. Then, we looked at the Egyptian Revolution in Egypt, because they didn’t like some of the things their president was doing. Their president had been in power for 30 years, and he finally stepped down. Egypt is going to place a new government, so it’s going to be interesting these next couple months. We then hopped on our netbooks and did some research on the revolution. Three questions we were supposed to think about were: #1- Why did the people of Egypt not like Mubarak? #2- What do you think will happen next in Egypt? #3- Describe what type of government you think they should have now. At 12:00, we had a 5 minute period of free time, and at 12:05, we lined up to dock the netbooks. Our teacher left during recess to take his son to the doctor because his son had an ear infection and was up all night.

When we came back, we had a substitute. She said to get back in our groups and finish 4.2. We then went over it with the sub. The lesson was all about finding tips and tax. All you do is you find your total and then you multiply it by your tax. Then you add the tax to your total, and then take that total and multiply it by a % tip. You would then add the tip to the total, and get your total for your meal. (For example you’re at a restaurant and you ordered a hamburger for $1.95, a small French fry for $0.99, and a small soda for $0.75. You would add these up to get a total of $3.69. Say we had a 15% tax. You would convert 15% to 0.15, and multiply it by $3.69 to get about $0.55. Then add the $0.55 to $3.69 to get $4.24.

Imagine you want to give a 20% tip. You would convert 20% to .20, and multiply it by $4.24. You should come up with about $0.85 for your tip. Last, you add $0.85 to $4.24, and get a total of $5.09, which includes the total price of the meal, the tax, and the tip. I hope this helps, and isn’t very confusing. :)

After we went over 4.2, we started 4.3, which is all about “Finding Bargains”. At last, 2:30 came! The first thing we did was pass out valentines. Then at 2:45, we opened the wall and mingled with Mrs. Malloy’s class. After the party, we wrote down our homework, and packed up and left. Here’s the homework for tonight:

Day 100 - Good Bye Counting Tape!

Good morning! Today is February 11, 2011, and Day 100! We have a new student. Unfortunately, I can’t put names, otherwise I would. But he is from Korea. Today, we don’t have any library, so we went straight into Calendar Math. We went over daily problem, and then the daily shape. Turns out, we’ve already done the shape, so we skipped it and went on to Social Studies. We worked on or CBA sources. We got on our net books until break, and then got to have break. After break, we continued to work on our net books again, but this time on stream tables for science. We got to finish up looking at some multi-media tables, where we could change variables such as slope and the stream of water from stream to flood. Then we had lunch and recess.

When we came back, we did math. This afternoon we did 4.2. We got into groups (We got to pick them), and then got to order food from “Larry’s”, so that we could find the tax and the tip for our meals. Then, at about 2:05, we did “Steps to Respect” with Mr. B. After that, we went on to “Mystery Class”. During that time, we got to have leftover pancakes and whip cream made by our wonderful teacher! We then did book clubs.. After that, we did our jobs, and did PSV. Have an awesome weekend! Here’s the homework:

Day 99 - One More Day!

Hello Mr. Steele’s Class. Today is February 10, 2011, and we have one more day before Day 100! This morning, we came up to the classroom, unpacked, and got straight to work. We did the daily math until about 9:20, and then started going over it. About 10 minutes later, we started working on 4.1, finding sales tax for various items. Then at 10:00, we went down to computer lab to work on our CBA’s, but we cut it short because we got the netbooks! We went over how lucky we were to get these, and how we have to treat these with respect. We then booted our netbooks and went over how to use them. We didn’t have them out long, because it was almost break. We all learned how to put them away, and we went to break. Shortly after 11:10, we met up with our UWB buddies. At 11:45 we got back together and looked at plans for a tunnel underground in Downtown Seattle. A student’s dad is working on it. The tunnel is going to be a mile and a half long! Some of the drill holes to sample the rock layers are 240- 300 feet approx. deep! After we took a short work period, it was time for lunch.

When we came back, we finished up the last two chapters that talk about the Han dynasty, medicine and science. The Han did moxibustion, which is a cone of powdered leaves or sticks that is set against skin and set on fire. This was used to treat long-term diseases such as arthritis. After that we had another period to work on our Emperor of Qin posters, color poems, and “The Girl Who Married the Moon”. At 2:48, we did some “Chaos in The Canyon”! We did the equivalent of one day. At about 3:10, we all did book clubs. We then cleaned up and left. Here’s the homework for tonight:

Day 98 - Math Check-Up Test

Hi, today is February 9, 2011. When we came in this morning, we unpacked our stuff, and started to work on word of the day and calendar math. At 9:04, we went down to music. We continued to go over the “Bullies Anonymous” script. We ran through lines and songs until it was time to go at 9:45. We came back and finished up calendar math, and did a check-up quiz for adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing decimals. Then we had break. After break, we did science. We went through pages 19, 23, 24, & 26-29. One of the questions on p 23 described a sand sample, and had you infer its source, how long it was moved, and anything else you might be able to guess about the sand sample, based on the description. Lunch time rolled around, and we all went outside.

When we came back from lunch, we played “Chaos in the Canyon”! We did the equivalent of 1 day. At about 1:40, we stopped and worked on Amelia Earhart and color poems. Then 2:00 came and we packed up and left. Here’s the homework for tonight:

Day 97 - Amelia Earhart Test

Good morning! Today is February 8, 2011. This morning, we came straight in, unpacked, and headed down to P.E. We are doing the same thing as yesterday, tennis. We got our rackets, and practiced rolling the ball from racket to racket. Then, we paired off, and one person pitched the ball, and another person hit it. After we came back from P.E, we went over Calendar Math. After we did that, we went over homework. We got our packet of math checked and stamped, and then we went over our BP math homework. It took a long time, because most of the problems were really long. So, we went over problem 15, 23, and 24. We finally started our regular math at about 10:45. At 11:00, we had break. When we came back, we continued working on math until about 11:30. Then we did science. We worked on pages in our science notebooks until lunch.

When we came back, we took another look at the Han dynasty in Social Studies. We started off reading Agriculture. Before we did that, we did a little bit of work in our notebook. We also did Industry and Art. After that, we did HM. We read a story called “the Girl Who never Grew Up”. It was an interesting story, but didn’t have a satisfactory ending. We then got into book club groups and read our books. Then once we got back together, we took a test on Amelia Earhart. Once we were done, we were free to work on either our Emperor posters. Or some questions that we have to do later for HM. 3:30 came fast, so everyone did PSV and we left. Here’s the homework:

Day 96 - Noooo! More Homework

Good morning Mr. Steele’s class. Today is Monday 2/7/11. This morning, we started off by going to P.E. We are starting the Tennis Unit. We did mainly did drills. After that at 10:00, we were back in the classroom doing math. We are still doing division of decimals. We continued doing math even after we had break. When we got finished with math, we did science. We set up the computers, and we rotated looking at stream tables. If you weren’t on the computer, you were reading a selection in the Earth History books and answering response questions. Then we had lunch and recess.

In the afternoon, we did Social Studies. We started reading about the Han Dynasty. We read the first two sections, the intro and Warfare. We also filled out some answers in our Social Studies notebooks. After that, we did HM (Houghton Mifflin). We finished up our outlines for “Barnstorming Bessie Coleman”. Then, our teacher gave us some grave news. We are falling behind. So, he is increasing our homework. There will be times when we will have homework on the weekends, and we have to do a math packet, two days every night. So we have the packet, and our BP3 homework. So here’s the homework:

Day 95- Finn Hill Meeting

Hi, today is Friday, February 4, 2011. This morning, we came in and unpacked our belongings, and at 9:13, we headed down to library. We are doing another book report on our favorite author. A due date hasn’t been set yet, but you have to read a book by your favorite author (preferably a book you haven’t read before). After library, we headed back up to the classroom to do math. But we only had about 15-20 minutes to work on it, because the counselor from Finn Hill Junior High came to fill us in on our schedule, our electives, and the honor programs like Social Studies, Language Arts, and Math. It was very informative. She also handed out a sheet to fill out with our families for our electives, and important info like phone numbers, and names. If you want to try and apply for Honors Language Arts/ Social Studies, you have to get a parent signature. She also handed out a booklet that had all the information on the electives and required subjects in school. It also had some info on honors. Then she left, and we had break.

After break, we continued working on math lesson 3.2. If you convert a decimal to a fraction with the same denominator on the bottom of the fraction, you can cancel out the denominator, and use long division to get your answer, which I find is a lot easier than doing the “Fliparoo #2”. Then we took the five minutes of recess, and went on to play our Friday game in the gym.

After lunch, we worked on our CBA for Social Studies. We were finding more sources and working to find answers for the questions in the packet/guidelines. Then, at 1:50, we started Mystery Class! We talked about times, measuring the sun, and the prime meridian/ equator. After that, we did book clubs. The end of the day came, and we cleaned out our desks and went home. The only homework we have is:

Reading 30 minutes and Reading Record.

Day 94- UWB Buddies

Good morning Mr. Steele’s Class! Today is Thursday, February 3, 2011. Mr. Steele’s not here today, so we have a substitute who’s helping Mr. Nash. In the morning we did math, dividing decimals. Then at 10:00 we went down to the computer lab to find sources for our CBA. We had break, then met with our UWB buddies. We brought our reading books to read to our buddies. We then had about fifteen minutes to work on our CBA sources. Then we went to lunch.

When we came back, we did HM. We read a story about Bessie Coleman. She was the first African American Woman to get a license to fly. We also did book clubs, and “Chaos in the Canyon”. We did the equivalent of one day. At the end of the day, we did PSV, and left. Here’s the homework:

Day 93- Dividing Decimals

Good morning! Today is Wednesday, February 2, 2011. This morning, we came in and unpacked our things. At 9:04, we lined up and headed down to music. We went over solos and songs that we would be singing for “Bullies Anonymous”. If you want a copy of the music, see the music teacher. We came back and continued working on the daily problem, shape, and conversion. Then we did BP3, dividing fractions. The trick to dividing decimals is to change them into fractions, and do the “Fliparoo #2” or “Fliparoo #1”. Break time came and went, so we got on to science. We got onto the computers and got onto Foss website and looked at multi-media sand. If we were done with that, we illustrated our color poems and worked on our Qin Shihuangdi posters. Then we went to recess.

After lunch, we looked at the CBA essay guidelines for the three main philosophies, Confucianism, Daoism, and Legalism. The end of the day came, and we did PSV. Here’s the homework:

Day 92 - Mystery Sand

Hi, and welcome to February 1, 2011. Today is a Tuesday, so we came in, unpacked, and headed off to PE. We had a free day choice, so we voted on different games and ended up playing Pop Up. We came back at about 10:50 and immediately went down to the computer lab to take an online math quiz. It was a lot better, because you could go back and check your answers. We came back just in time for break. At 11:10, we did science. Today, we observed four different types of sand. One of them was sample of mystery sand. We wrote our observations down in our science journal.

Lunch came and went, and we did Social Studies. We started Qin Shihuangdi posters, so we worked on them. Then we did “Chaos in the Canyon”. We did the equivalent of 1 day. Then we did book clubs. At 3:25 we did PSV, and went home. Here’s the homework for tonight:
