Day 58 - Fliperroo Number 2!

This morning in class we walked into our classroom and unpacked our necessities for today. Everyone started on today’s calendar math and worked on it until it was time to go to PE. In PE we did bowling again. We did fitness bowling today, instead of bingo again. Fitness bowling is where you get a paper with a key and on it is the numbers 1-10 and it is also had SPARE and STRIKE written on it. So when you take your two turns then you add up them up and get the sum. You take the sum and find where it is on your key. When you find it on your key you do the small action or activity for however long it says. It was really fun! Then it was time to go back up to the classroom. When we got back up to the classroom, we did daily math. In math we continued on how to divide fractions. Then it was break time.

At break we had another birthday today. We got juice, cupcakes and a napkin. It was really yummy and a good snack for people who didn’t have one. Then we moved onto the science questions that we had. We actually had only 5 questions but we didn’t finish until lunch time.

When we got back from lunch we did social studies. We read a little about what this new chapter is about. We did a paper about what we think certain objects are and where they came from and why they are used. That’s all we did. We moved onto language arts next. We got a paper on how to make a sentence that is complete and not at start-stop sentence. We also did another fact and opinion paper/paragraph. When we finished that we watched another Shakespeare video. We watched it all the way up to jobs. So we did jobs and then pack stack and vac. We then went home for the day.

Day 57 - Welcome Back

We are finally back, to school from our long thanksgiving break. It was sort of unexpected because of the snow. So this morning we came in and got our stuff unpacked. We were getting everything back on track again. So we did our calendar math and then at 9:04 we went to PE. In PE we did bowling again. We actually did bowling bingo. How to play bowling bingo is you get a bingo card. You bowl and then however many pins you knock down, is the number you mark off. If you don’t get a strike then you go a second time. If you were to knock down a 6 and a 3, then you cross out six and three. Or you could cross out the sum of the two. When you get numbers in a row or going horizontally or vertically then that is a bingo. So at 9:45, Mr. Steele was at the door ready to take us to our class. When we got back to class we went into today’s lesson in math. Today’s lesson was about how to divide fractions. Mr. Steele showed us a good way on how to do it. We worked on some of that until it was time to have break.

At break we opened the wall and saw all of our friends. We didn’t have snack until after so we just hung out and talked. When break was over we said bye to our friends and then closed the wall. Then we did science. Everyone got their own little flower and a long piece of packing tape. We put the tape sticky side up. We stuck certain important parts of the flower to the tape. Then we flipped the tape over onto a piece of paper. You would have to push it down just to make sure it stuck well enough. That’s all we did in science, plus a paper on the flower that we dissected. Then the bell rang for lunch.

We had to stay in 8 minutes extra because that’s how much time we owed. When the timer went off for us, we went outside to recess. Then lunch also. After we came back from lunch, we did social studies. In social studies we got an end of the unit quiz. By the time we finished the quiz it was about 2:30! We only had a full hour left of the day! We got to watch some videos for Shakespeare so we are sort of prepared for this coming Thursday at the play. When those videos were done, it was 3:00. Then we talked about the difference between opinion and fact. It sort of tied into writing because we might be writing an essay soon that is a persuasive essay. We were going to have to use facts and opinions in it. Then it was time for jobs. We did jobs and then pack stack and vac. Then we went home.

Day 56 - Snowy day

This morning was a chilly, snowy day. Almost everyone was in bug puffy jackets with boots and gloves. Most people woke up this morning to see a white yard and nice snow falling gently to the ground. Same with while we were at school! When we opened up our binders and started calendar math the snow kept on coming! A lot of people were gone today due to vacations. So we had music today. At 9:04 we went down the hall to the music room. In music we did some reading on a composer, Mozart. We did the small little test after it too. We also did a game called drop the needle. Mrs. Frank would play a song and we had to try to guess what composer, composed it. When it was 9:45 we had to go back to our class. When we got back we finished up the daily math. Then we got a math test. The math test took up time until it was break.

At break we met up with all of our friends. Some people were talking about the snow and how excited they were about it. When it was 11:10 we sat down and had snack. Some people went over their test and others finished up the test. Then at 11:30 we started science. In science today we were going to do some plant transpiration and go get a plant from outside, but since it is snowing we are just doing some reading. We read three pages in the science book. We read for about 40 minutes. Then it was time to go to recess and lunch.

When we got back from lunch we did social studies. We got in groups of four and then we did an assignment. We had to draw sort of a picture about the land features of a certain area. Then we did language arts. In language arts we did some work on our homework from over the weekend. When we finished talking about it, we read a story out of Houghton Mifflin. The story was called “Alone, against the sea” Then we wrote down some notes

Day 55 - Multiplication of Fractions Algorithm

Yay! It’s Friday! This morning we came in and unpacked. We did our calendar math until it was 9:13. At 9:13 we went to library. In library we mostly had checkout time. Mrs. Joseph told us about the different kinds of fiction genres. She also told us that she might assign us a book report with a certain genre. So the paper we were using to find research databases was done. Except some people hadn’t finished so instead of getting checkout time and reading time, they had to finish that. So once it was time to go back up to our class, we lined up. Mr. Steele took us up to our class again. Then when we got there, we finished the calendar math. When we finished the math we moved onto our daily math. Then it was time for break!

Today we finally got to have break with the other class. From now on, to keep our floors, computers and room clean, we are having snack after break. Instead of having science right after break, we are doing math. We had to make another algorithm poster but for multiplying fractions. So we had to decorate it and make it neat and perfect. Everyone was working hard to get it done today. Then the bell rang for recess. Today at recess we got to play elimination. It was fun!

When we came back from lunch we did science. We did it now since we couldn’t do it earlier. We actually had to do a test on the unit. It was about all the things we learned lately. Then we did a writing thing. We are going to be writing about anything interesting that happens. We worked a little on our design a scene project too. Then it was time for jobs and to pack up and go home. Have a good weekend.

Day 54 - End of Hamlet

This morning in class we walked up the back stairs and then walked into our classroom. We unpacked our backpack from all of its contents. Then we started on our calendar math. We didn’t have any specialist today so we worked on daily math and our calendar math. We also went over homework over the time too. We needed to work on some math because we had a lot to learn. We were supposed to go to computer lab at ten o’clock. We didn’t go to computer lab at that time but at ten thirty. When we got to computer lab we are going to learn about Microsoft excel. We learned how to make graphs and how to find the average of things on the computer. It was really cool! We worked all the way up until it was our break time.

We didn’t get to have our break with the other class again. We came back for break too late so we didn’t have time to open the wall. But then we did science. We got our cucumbers out of the water and the celery leaves were red. For some people the celery stick gained weight and for others it lost weight. Then it was time for lunch so we went down to lunch.

We ate lunch and then had recess. When we came back from lunch and recess we did social studies. In social studies we did some work on a hypothesis for why people lived in certain parts of China. Then we read the last chapter of hamlet. Once we finished the book we got to make our own scene of hamlet. We could make it any time setting and any scene from the book. So we did that until it was time to pack up and do jobs. That was the end of our day.

Day 53 - Vision and hearing

This morning in class, we came in and unpacked. We did our calendar math this morning and then at 9:05 we went to music class. In music we had a substitute. I don’t know his name but he had a guitar. It was a handmade guitar. He told us a little about himself. He makes his own guitars or he makes them to sell. They were so cool! Then we played a game. It was called, “Spot the beat” We played that the whole music time. What you do to play is you make one person a detective and one person the bodyguard. There is also a person that is the beat starter. The detective and the bodyguard step out of the room. The beat starter starts the beat and then we follow along. While we start, the bodyguard makes sure the detective isn’t able to see who started the beat. Then we call the detective in and then he or she tries to see who started the beat. They get only three tries. So we played that all the way until it was time to go back to the class. When we got back we did daily math.

At break time the other class had to go to the hearing and vision tests. So we had another break without them. Then we had to cut our break short since we had to go to the vision and hearing tests too. When we came back we did science. In science we got celery sticks and then put them in red colored water (food coloring). We were testing to see if the color would go into the celery or if it would even suck anything up at all.

Then it was time for lunch. At lunch recess it was really rainy. When we came back we did social studies. We did social studies all the way until the day was done.

Day 52 - Tons of bugs

Good morning! Today we walked into our classroom we unpacked our backpacks and pulled out our binders. We sat at our desks and started on calendar math. At 9:04 we went down to PE. We did bowling again. Mr. Kolhwes was there again. Mrs. Kolhwes is at Islandwood with the fifth graders. So she will be gone until they get back. Again, we did groups and we bowled for the whole PE time. It was a fun time! So when we got back it was 9:45. Today at 10:00 we had the bug exhibit. So we did calendar math and some daily math until it was time to go to the exhibit. The exhibit was in the art and science room. When we got there we sat criss-cross and he had a power point up. There were many bugs everywhere in cages. There were also labeled boxes of dead insects. We sat down and he introduced himself. He told us a ton of things about bugs. Then he took out the bugs and held them in his hands to show us what they looked like. The bugs he showed us were a scorpion, tarantula, skunk beetles, millipede, and a centipede. We had to go back up to our class at 11:00.

When we got back we had break. We couldn’t have break with Mrs. Malloy’s class because at break time they had to go to the bug exhibit. So we had break alone for the second time this week. Then we did daily math. We didn’t have time this morning so we did it now. We worked on math all the way up until lunch time.

At lunch we got to sit wherever we wanted because the fifth graders were gone. When we came back from lunch we did social studies. In social studies we finished up gluing and making our group posters. We worked on that all the way up until 2:00. At two o’clock we read one chapter from Hamlet. We only have one chapter left and we will finish it tomorrow. Then we did a Charlotte Doyle quiz. People who haven’t finished the question paper worked on that first. We worked on that until it was time for jobs. We did jobs then P.S.V and lined up to go home.

Day 51 - Plants

This morning in class we came in and unpacked our stuff. We started to work on our calendar math but then at 9:04 we lined up for PE. We walked down to PE and we had a substitute. It was Mr. Kolhwes. Today in PE we did bowling. We set up pins and then got into groups. We bowled a lot and had a lot of fun. The bowling balls were rubber and greasy. It was a little gross but, still fun. Then it was 9:45 so we had to line up and go back to our classroom. When we got back to the class we did our daily math. In math today we learned some new things on multiplying fractions.

Then it was 10:59 and the wall opener ran to the wall and put the lever in. Then… it turned 11:00!!! Everyone ran to see their friends and have snack. We had a lot of fun snacking and talking. Then it was 11:10 so we had to close the wall. So we sat back down at our desks and were ready to learn again. So we would have normally done science right now but instead we did language arts. So we got our Houghton Mifflin and read the Charlotte Doyle story. We also got four written questions to work on while we read it. Then it was time to go to lunch and recess.

When we got back from lunch we did social studies right away. We worked on what we did last time. We continued cutting out the paper and cardboard. We finished social studies at 2:00. Then we read hamlet until about 2:30. Then we did science. We watched this video on how plants eat and live and a lot of other things. So we watched the science video. Then we worked on our Charlotte Doyle story until it was time to do jobs. Then we packed up and went home.

Day 50 - DANCE IS TONIGHT

Today is the fiftieth day of school! This morning we came in and unpacked everything we needed for school. We worked on calendar math until we had to head down to the library. In library we got the paper from last time. The research database paper that was about Babylon is what we worked on the whole time while we were there. We also had about 10 minutes for checkout out time. Some people got some really good books and others didn’t get anything. Then we came up back to class once library was over. So we came up and finished up our calendar math for the day. We went over calendar math and then moved onto the daily math. In our daily math we got to have our appointment wheel. It was our number 10. We worked on daily math until it was time for break.

Because of some roughhousing we couldn’t open up the wall today. We had to make sure and maintain our behavior or we would lose our privilege for opening the wall. So we had break alone and ate our snack alone. Then we did science. In science we looked at the seeds we had from a long time ago. The seeds had sprouted and grown a lot. When we first put them in, they were just little seeds. Now they are big roots. We did some observations and then looked at a few through the microscopes. Then it was time to go to lunch and recess.

Once recess and lunch were over we came in and did social studies right away. In social studies we worked on some questions about China. It was about the land and the area they were in. We had to cut out and make a little model of the land. We worked on social studies up until three o’clock. Then we got a climb or die quiz. As soon as we finished that small quiz we had to get another paper to go with a story called, “The true confessions of Charlotte Doyle” Some people started the reading but others still continued to work on the climb or die questions. Then at 3:20 it was time for us to do our jobs. So everyone did jobs and then we had to pack up. We packed up and got in line ready to go home.

Day 48 - Intro to Ancient China

Good morning!!! This morning was a chilly cold morning! We came in and unpacked our stuff. We started on our calendar math. We did the daily shape, counting tape, daily problem, and daily conversions. So when it was 9:04 we headed down to PE for dance class. We had a lot of fun doing the same dances from yesterday. It’s really a fun week, when we get to do the dance week. So after we practiced all of our dances it was time to go back up to our classroom and get to work. So once we came back, we went over our calendar math. Then it was time to move on to our daily math. We did a new kind of transformation with our desks. We had four groups of eight or seven. So we worked on this group assignment for a while and then we had break.

So we had break and talked a lot. Once break was done we moved onto science. In science we had to answer some questions and see how much we know about cockroaches. We also answered a few questions about some other bugs too. We had to try to guess what kind of bug they were and answer things about what they do. Then when we finished those questions we had to leave for lunch.

When we came back from lunch we went right into social
studies. In social studies we got all new stuff. We are now going to learn about china. Then we got new paper work to go into our social studies binder. We answered a few questions about our environment. Then we moved onto a writing assessment. We got a prompt and we started to write. Then it was time to do pack stack and vac. We also had to do jobs of course. Then we went home for the day.

Day 47 - Dance week

Welcome back from the weekend!!! This morning in class we came in and got our seats. We unpacked our backpack and then sat down and did calendar math. We did calendar math until it was 9:04. We went down to PE and the other class was already there. We had dance week, this week. We all came in found a spot on the floor. The music DJ guy told us some songs we will be doing. We did the cupid shuffle, the something slide… I forgot the name. We also did the wickey wow, wow, and the jitterbug bug jog. It is a great work out and a ton of fun! We also have dance week tomorrow too. So when it was over we went back up to the classroom, hot and sweaty. So we came up and went over our calendar math. Then we did daily math. After maybe 45 minutes of math we had break.

At break we had snack and then hung out with friends and talked. So right when break was done we got to do science. In science we got the cockroaches out and then we tried to choose which one we had before. Then we got to do the experiments that we made for the roaches. We worked on our experiments until it was time to go to recess and lunch.

When we came back from lunch we went right into socials studies. In social studies we had to go back and do everything we had not done in our social studies binder. We did that up until about 2:30. Then for half an hour we read Hamlet. We moved on to Houghton Mifflin. We finished up a story about the two men that climbed Mount Everest. We only had a little to read so we started to read another story next. It was called, the confessions of Charlotte Doyle. Then it was time to pack up and do jobs. So we did that and then went home for the day.

Day 46 - Bullying Video

This morning in our warm classroom, on this cool day we came in and did our calendar math right away. So we had to work on calendar math until about 9:15. At 9:15 we headed down to library. In library we had to do a lot of things. We went into the computer lab and did some quiz/trivia about some social studies stuff we had been studying. So we went to our assigned computer and then we worked on those little trivia questions. After we did some things on that site, we had some checkout time. So everyone either got a good book or just sat down and read some books in different places. So after we had checkout time it was time to go back to our classroom. Then when we got back we did our daily math. Since we had library later we don’t have as much time for math. So we also got a math test. We worked on the math test until it was time to have break.

At break we had snack and talked a lot. Then we finished up the math test. We moved onto science after everyone finished the math test. In science we didn’t get to play with the cockroaches but we worked on making an experiment to do with them. Then after we finished we had to head down to lunch.

When we got back from lunch we did social studies. In social studies we did an end of the chapter test. When we finished it we watched a video on bullying. I think it really helped for a lot of people. Then when we finished the video we had a quiet work period until the end of the day. Then it was time to pack, stack and vac. So we did that until it was time to go home for the weekend.

Day 45 - Assyrians and Babylonians

Good morning! Welcome back to class! So we climbed up the back stairs and then walked into our classroom. We got our chairs and unpacked and were ready to learn. So we did calendar math and word of the day as always. We did our daily problem, counting tape, daily shape, and daily depositor. So while we did that Mr. Steele came around and checked to see who had homework and who didn’t. About 70% had homework and 30% didn’t. We are hoping that we will soon get 100% homework. That day will come soon though. So we did calendar math and some daily math until it was time to go to computer lab. At 10:00 we lined up and headed down to computer lab. In computer lab Mr. Steele showed us some new things on Microsoft office PowerPoint. It was really cool because we learned stuff that most people never knew about. So we worked on stuff in the computer lab until it was time to go back to the class for break.

At break we had snacks and did talking for our 10 minutes. Once those ten minutes passed we went back to math. What we did in math today was our algorithm posters. We started them for the first time to today. We had to finish them today. So we had to work quickly. We only had an hour to finish the whole poster. We were going to make them within our group and then vote on them at the end. Who’s ever got the most votes would get $400 for the whole group. We got to figure out how to split it. So then it was time to go to recess. Most groups had not finished so they stayed in and worked on it. Then after a while we had to go to lunch.

At lunch they were serving a chicken sandwich, hamburger, cheeseburger, chicken nuggets and pizza sticks. Then once we came back from lunch we did social studies. We had to do a lot of reading about four or five pages. Then we answered questions about it too in our social studies binder. After about an hour if social studies we went and finished up the dinosaur video from the other day. It was a really, really good and interesting video. Then we moved onto Hamlet. We read a chapter in it and it was a good chapter too.

Day 43 - Fractions

This morning in class we came in and unpacked our stuff. Then it was 9:04 so we headed down to PE. In PE it was the girls turn to do the high jump, AKA scissor kick. So about only 5 girls did the jumping thing. It was really fun for people to watch and do it. We are having a championship tomorrow for all the last finalists. So we did the high kick until it was time to go back to our classroom. When we got back up to our class we pulled out our calendar math again and finished that up. Then we went over last night’s homework. Then we did an Activote test for math. It was only five questions but some of them were longer so it took a while. Then when we finished the test it was time for break.

So the wall opener opened the wall and then everyone ran to their friends. Once it was 11:10 we all were in our seats ready to move on with the day. We did science after break. In science we did some reading and more looking at bugs in pictures. We answered some questions about what we were talking about. Then we learned how to handle the cockroaches. We talked about that until it was time to go to lunch.

At lunch we had some good yummy food. Then we had recess. No one is allowed on the lower field because it is always wet. But maybe if it dries up then we will be able to use it again. So once we came back from lunch we did social studies. In social studies the last group did their small play. Then we did some reading. Followed by a paper that went with our reading. Then we moved onto reading Hamlet because we haven’t read it for a while. After we read some of Hamlet we finished up the rest of the video from yesterday. It was very, very interesting and cool and even funny sometimes. Then it was time to do jobs. So we did jobs and then pack, stack, and vac. Then we went home.

Day 42 - Mechanical Dioramas

Welcome back from candy and fun all weekend! Now we have to get back to business! Most people this morning were pretty tired from trick or treating last night. Since Halloween was on a Sunday that was the only time we could go trick or treating. Well you could go on Saturday but no one would probably have any candy out. ANYWAYS... This morning in class we came in and unpacked all of our stuff. So we did some calendar math and then it was time to go to music. So we lined up in the back of the room and walked down to music. In music we did some reading on a composer named Hayden. Then we did questions on them. So then it was time to go back to our classroom. In class we started some new calendar math pages. Then we worked on our daily math. Then at 11 o’clock it was time to have break.

So at break most people had candy for snack. Then we went on to science. In science we looked at pictures of bugs and named the parts of the bugs. Then we read some things about more bugs. Whew! A lot of bugs! So then when we started to read it was actually time to go to lunch and recess. At recess today we played battlefield in the gym.

So when we came back from lunch we finished up the reading in science. And then we answered some questions for what we read. So by the time that was done it was 2:00. Then we moved onto social studies. In social studies we did the plays finally. Everyone did there little skit and then we watched other peoples skits too. Then we watched a video about dinosaurs 4.4 billion years ago. It was also sort of about earth. So we watched that until it was time to do jobs. So we did jobs and then it was time to pack stack and vac. Then we lined up and went home.
