Day 71 - Squid Dissection

This morning in class we came in and unpacked our things. We started calendar math. We had a really, really hard problem today. We had to do a lot of simplifying and only a few people got it. At 9:14 we went to library. At library, Mrs. Joseph assigned us a book report. We have to find a Newberry award winning book and read it. When we get back from winter break we will do the actual report. So we spent the whole library time finding books. So when we got back from the library we worked on the math problem all the way until break time.

At break we had our snacks. Then we did Houghton Mifflin. We worked on the packet of papers for the Amelia Earhart. We did that until it was time to go to lunch.

When we got back from lunch we did the squid dissection. We all had one stinky squid. We had a razor blade and then dissected it and it was really, really fun. Then we had free time until the end of the day.

Day 70 - Choir Assembly

Today, we have been in school for 70 days exactly!!! We only have 110 days of school left. So this morning in class we came in and unpacked. We started on our calendar math. Today we didn’t have any daily conversion, only daily shape and daily problem. We did calendar math all the way until 9:45. Then we started daily math. Today we would have gone to computer lab at 9:50 but we didn’t have time. Instead we worked on daily math until about 10:20. At ten twenty we went to computer lab. In computer lab we went to our assigned computers. We were planning on checking out Microsoft office publisher, but we had to work on changing our passwords. The computers were really, really slow so it took a long time. Some people already had theirs changed, so they got to play on coolmath4kids.com. By the time most people were finally on, we needed to go back to the classroom for break.

We actually didn’t get to have brake because we had about 15 minutes of game time on the computer and that was considered our break. So once we got back we just got to have snack quietly at our seat. Mr. Steele passed out our science quiz. The quiz was 17 questions long. So we did the quiz. We worked on it all the way until lunch time.

When lunch recess and lunch was over, we came in and then kept working on the quiz. We worked on it for about 45-1 hour. Then we went over it and corrected it. Then we did social studies. In social studies we moved onto the next thing in the Zhou Dynasty. Then we went to an assembly and did a sing a long. Then we did pack stack and vac and then went home.

Day 69 - Goodbye Bacteria

This morning in class we came in and unpacked. We had music class today. In music we practiced all of our Christmas songs. Then Mrs. Frank told us that we are going to do a small musical. We normally don’t do one in 6th grade but this one is about bullying. So we will start it in about May. Then when we got back to the classroom we worked on math. We went over our math assessment that we did. Then we did some more daily math all the way until break time.

Once break was here we had snack. We are still having break alone. Then break was over and we went back to our seats. We worked on the same math paper until it was time to go to lunch.

When we got back from lunch we did science. In science we looked at the bacteria we have had growing. Then we moved onto our science notes again. We worked on the science notes until it was time to go and do jobs. We did jobs and then it was time to pack up and go home.

Day 68 - How Likely Is It?

This morning we came in and unpacked our things. We got to work right away on calendar math. Then at 9:04 we went down to PE. In PE we played a game and I don’t of different colored hula hoop in front of each team. Then there were 3 hoops in the middle of the gym with 6 beanbags in each. In each group there were about 4 or 5 people. So once the PE teacher says go, we run to get the bean bag and put it in our hoop. Then we would tag the next person and they would go get a bean bag and you had to try to get as many bags as you could. Then we mixed up the rules and added many different tricks. Then it was 9:50 so we went back to the classroom. When we got back we worked on math. We are moving onto a new bits and pieces. It is called “How likely is it?” So we worked on one problem all the way until break.

We had break. Then we did the same math problem all the way until lunch time.

When we got back from lunch we did science. In science we kept writing down some notes for our test that we may do tomorrow or on Thursday. Then we moved onto social studies. In social studies we did work on Daoism. We had to be peaceful and quiet. We could do anything and sit with our partners. We went through and read the section on Daoism and then filled out the questions for them. Then Mr. Steele pulled names of people and if you were called, you would answer whatever question he asked you. Then we did Houghton Mifflin. We read a really long story about Amelia Earhart. Then it was time to do jobs. After jobs we did pack stack and vac and then we went home.

Day67 - Substitute

Today we came unpacked and lined up to go to P.E at 9:05. At 9:50 we came back did our test and we got right to work most of us finished before break but we still had to be quite for the ones that were still working and that was ok because it was quite reading time and everyone liked it or I think they did. And we worked until 11:00 break time. But today during the break we couldn’t open the wall today because it was too rough during break time. After break time we saw a science video on bacteria and we saw it until lunch time at 12:10. Then when we came back we did social studies and we watch two videos on china. The video would tell us how there life was like. Then we did writing on the three of the topic we worked on over the week end and choose one of them and put it into a paragraph. Then we packed up and went home!!!

Day 66 - Confucianism

This morning was a cloudy but nice, in a way morning. So we came into class and we had no daily shape or conversion. We had another one of the math tests. They are technically almost like the MSP but not as crucial. So Mr. Steele went over some things and then we had library at 9:14 so we had to go.  When we got to library we did another scavenger hunt on the “World book online” Then when we finished we got about 15 minutes of checkout. Then we went back up to the classroom. When we got back to the classroom we did the test again. We did it all the way up until break time.

When we started break some boys got into rough housing so we have to stop break for a while. So for a while, I don’t know when, but we will not have break. We worked on the math test for about 45 minutes more. Then we did science. In science we worked on our graphing again. We only had about 10-20 minutes to work on that. So when it was time to go to lunch, we did.

When lunch was over we came back in to our classroom. We started on social studies. We got into 4 different groups and formed our desks into circles. Then one desk was set in the middle. The “elders” would sit in the middle on top of their desk. They would tell us certain things to do. They weren’t bossy though. Then we studied up on questions. Then Mr. Steele assigned everyone in the group to a question. Then he would ask all the questions. So as he asked questions, we answered them. If you answered them right, then you get $20. Then we did some reading out of Houghton Mifflin. Then it was time to do planner and then do jobs. Then we went home for the weekend. Have a nice weekend.

Day 65 - Math Assessment #1

This morning was a drizzly morning! We came in today and unpacked our backpack and everything else. Today was the day we did the first math assessment. Today we had no specialists. We also had no daily problem or daily shape. We would have gone to the computer lab but the math assessment was really long so we didn’t have time for computer class. The math assessment took up all the time until it was break time. We corrected the test before break and we got to correct it ourselves, but Mr. Steele still helped us.

So we had snack and took a break from the test. Then we continued to work on the assessment. We worked for about 20 more minutes and then started on science. In science we talked about how each colony of bacteria has about 1 million cells in them. Then in our science notebook it had a page that we were going have to make 1 million dots. In two minutes most people made about 250-300 dots. When we combined them all together we had about 8,000 dots. We figured out that it would take about 4 hours to get to one million dots without stopping. Then it was time to go to lunch.

When we got back from lunch we did social studies. In social studies we did some reading and some work on a page in our binders. Then we did some Houghton Mifflin. In our reading book we read more poems. Then we did some haiku poems. We did one on the topic of Christmas and holidays, and then one was a mystery. Everyone had to try to guess the topic of your haiku. Then we did some MSP reading review. Then it was time for pack stack and vac. That was the end of our day.

Day 64 - End of the Shang Dynasty

This morning in class, we came in and unpacked our stuff. We started our daily calendar math and got situated for today. Then at 9:04 we went down to music class. When we got to music class our reading books on composers were on our spots. We read more on a new composer today and then watched a video on a song from that composer. Our composer today was Schubert. So we did the reading and then did the question sheet. After that we sang about 10 Christmas songs from the little green song books. Then it was time for us to go back to our classroom. When we got back we did daily math. We worked on that up until it was time to go to break.

When break was over we continued working on the math for about another half an hour. Then we moved onto science. Today we finished watching the video from yesterday. The video finished right at lunch time so we went out to lunch next.

When we got back from lunch, we did social studies. We had to do a test for the end of the unit. Since today was Wednesday we didn’t do anything except the test. Then at 2:00 we went home.

Day 63 - The Unknown World

This morning in class we came in and unpacked our binders and reading books. Then we started calendar math. At 9:04 it was time to go down to PE. In PE we played a game called pin knock down. How you play pin knock down is you set up all the bowling pins around the gym. Then one person goes to each pin. Then everyone who didn’t get to a pin lined up. There were bean bags everywhere and people grabbed them. Then the game started. Everyone had to protect their own pin while trying to knock down others pins. When the game first began, it was really slow. But then at some point it got really fast and then the boys all formed an alliance and were knocking girl’s pins down really easily. Everyone had so much fun! But then the fun was over and it was time to go back to our classroom. When we got back Mr. Steele told us we will be doing a lot of review on math. We had a lot to do because of certain tests that are coming up. The test will be finding out what we have learned from the Bits and pieces 1 and 2. It is not the MSP though. After we went over some things it was time for break.

At break we had snack and then did a lot of talking with our friends. Then we moved onto science. In science we took another look at our bacteria. Some people bacteria grew more compared to yesterday. Then we wrote down our observations. Then we watched a video about different organisms and things that are places we would never guess. Then it was time to go to lunch.

When we got back from lunch we did social studies. We got to talk to our neighbors while we did some social studies art. Then we did some Houghton Mifflin reading. We read some poems about friendship. Some were happy and some were sad. Others were just sort of both. Then we filled out and worked on a paper about the poems. We worked on that until it was time for jobs. We did jobs and then pack stack and vac. Then we went home for the day.

Day 62 - Finn Hill Survey

Welcome back from the weekend! This morning we did our calendar math. We had music today, so at 9:04 we went down to music. In music class we did some reading on Beethoven. We read about 5 paragraphs and then answered questions about the reading. When everyone finished the reading we got a book of songs. In the book there were songs like, Rudolph the red nosed reindeer, the twelve days of Christmas, and many others. On the twelve days of Christmas, we got assigned a part to sing. We are singing eleven lords a’ leaping. So we sang songs all the way until it was time to go back to class. When we got back we finished up calendar math. Then we moved onto daily math. In math we didn’t do partners because Mr. Steele wants us to be more independent with our math. So we finished that up and then it was time for break.

We had break and filled our stomachs a little with snack. When break was over we sat back down. Then we moved onto science. In science we observed our bacteria. We recorded anything new that happened. Then we did some reading out of the diversity of life book. Then we went to lunch.

When we got back from lunch we did social studies. In social studies we worked on the same thing we have been for the last couple of days. Then we did some language arts things. Then it was time to do pack stack and vac. That was the end of Monday.

Day 61 - Bacteria

This morning in class, we came in and unpacked our backpacks. Today we didn’t have library so we did math all morning. In math we got to have appointment wheels. We didn’t do much except work all the way up to break time.

When break came around we got to talk to our friends. We had cupcakes also because of someone’s birthday. We have had 5 birthdays this week. When the wall was closed we went back to the math. If you were done with the math then you would work on the thank you card. The thank you card was for all the hamlet actors. We would thank them for staying after and for putting effort in for us to see their play. We would say who our favorite actor/actress was and then say our favorite part too. We also decorated it fancy and fun for them. Then we moved onto science. In science we learned some things on bacteria. We got to get a cotton swab and then go around and swab something. There were four people in your group and each got one Q-tip. Some people tested toilet seats and some tested door knobs. Many things were tested. Then it was time to go to lunch.

At lunch recess, we got to play battlefield. The other class was invited to play also. It was really fun! Then we went and ate lunch. When we came back from lunch and recess we did social studies. We did the decoder thing again but were able to work in groups of four. Once social studies was over, we did a Hamlet opinion. Everyone took turns and typed it on a computer. Then we did language arts for the rest of the day. We did pack stack and vac and then went home for the weekend.

Day 60 - HAMLET!!!

Today was our play! Each student has written a brief paragraph below discussing their favorite part of the play!

My favorite part of Hamlet was when Ophelia went mad, and was handing out flowers, which were really actually rocks. She was dressed in a white shirt with a collar at her neck, and cuffs at her wrist. Ophelia was also wearing a maroon cloak that trailed a couple feet behind her. She had “Rosemary for remembering”, pansies, daisies, and she would’ve given some violets, but they all shriveled when her father died. It was funny to watch her, but sad at the same time because she lost her father, Polonius.

My favorite part in Hamlet were two parts, first when Hamlet and Laretes were sword fighting. The scenes were intense and nerve racking. And second when Ophelia went mad and brings flowers but they were rocks. I loved a lot of the parts but I chose these because they meant a lot to me in some way. The play was awesome.

My favorite part in Hamlet was when Laertes and Hamlet were sword fighting because it was intense and great to watch. It was intense because everybody who died in that part was poisoned Hamlet, Hamlet’s mom Gertrude, Claudius died of stabbing. Every time someone died it was great and filled with action. It was one of the best Shakespeare plays I’ve ever seen. It was awesome.

I had a couple favorite parts of the play. One of them were the scenes when Hamlet and Ophelia go mad and crazy such as, Ophelia thought that rocks were different types of flowers and Hamlet would say random stuff that was really funny. A scene I would have probably liked that they didn’t show was the grave digger scene. I also liked the sword fighting scene. Laertes and Hamlet sword fight. Hamlet has a normal sword, but Laertes has a poisoned sword. Hamlet got two out of three hits on Laertes, so the queen Gertrude had a toast for Hamlet. What she didn’t know was that the cup that she drank from was the poison goblet for Hamlet to drink from. Laertes got a cheap shot on Hamlet and so now Hamlet was envenomed. Hamlet got the sword from Laertes and struck him. Then Laertes told Hamlet that Claudius the king killed his father. In the end, Polonius, Ophelia, Claudius, Gertrude, Laertes and Hamlet died.

My favorite part was when they were burying Ophelia. That’s my favorite part because that’s when Hamlet and Horatio came the closest to me. They came to the edge or the crowd by us.

I really liked the scene where Ophelia went crazy because she did a great job acting and the make-up made it seem real. I felt I was there in the moment.

My favorite part of the play, Hamlet, was the very end when the ghost of Hamlet’s father meets Hamlet when he died. I really liked this part because a really wasn’t expecting Hamlet’s father to meet him, with his hand reached out toward Hamlet.

My favorite part of the play was when Hamlet and Laertes had the sword fight because it looked so real. It was also close up. It was really intense and gave me that feeling where I’m wondering what’s going to happen next.

My favorite part of Hamlet was at the end of the play, when everyone dies except Horatio. I like this part because of the actors. They made it seem like I had gone back in time and seen it all with my own eyes. It was so intense and so amazing, yet it was so unreal. I loved it and even the sword practice looked unpracticed. I know I already said this, but I loved it.

My favorite part of the play was when Hamlet grabbed Gertrude, slapped her, and when she cried for help, so did Polonius. When Hamlet heard him, he took out his knife, and started stabbing Polonius. This was my favorite part because Hamlet dragged the dead body out, and the actor Polonius didn’t even move a muscle!

My favorite part was when the wall opens like double doors, and Hamlet’s father comes in and takes Hamlet by the hand and he goes with the ghost.

My favorite part of Hamlet was when Hamlet was pretending to stab Ophelia’s father because then when he was being dragged out by Hamlet, he held perfectly still which was amazing.

My favorite part of the play was the end when the ghost comes out at the end. I liked it because the makeup he had on was awesome. I also liked how the lights when on and off like bolts of lightning in the dark sky.

My favorite part is when Hamlet had the sword fight with Laertes
For me, my favorite part of the play, Hamlet, was when Hamlet and Laertes had the sword fight. This was my favorite part of the play because the scene was very intense. Like at the part where Queen Gertrude drank from the poisoned cup and was dying during the fight. I loved that the people acting out Hamlet and Laertes really showed how angry they were by yelling and spitting.

My favorite part of the play was when Ophelia came out and was crazy and thought the rocks were flowers. It was my favorite part because of how Ophelia handed the king the rocks by throwing them at the floor. I also like how her hair was styled and how she got into character.

My most favorite part was where Ophelia enters the stage with blood singing and passing out rocks. I love this beautiful part because it is creepy and anger filled the room. It made me look at the stage like an addicting video game.

We went to see the play hamlet yesterday. My favorite part was the sword fighting. I liked it because there was a lot of action. The people were poisoned and in the end all the main characters died. Their names were Hamlet, Ophelia, the king, the queen and Laertes.

My favorite part of Hamlet was the beginning with the uncle giving the speech. I liked it because it was nice and bright and I liked the costumes they wore. They were white and I liked the look of the scene.

My favorite part was when Laertes and Hamlet were having a sword fight because it was full of action. Almost everybody died. Hamlet died, Claudius, Laertes, and Gertrude. It was an intense scene among all the other scenes because a lot of people died during that scene. Especially they died by poison. When Hamlet switched swords it was a smart choice because it had venom so Laertes and Hamlet end up dying. Then Gertrude died by drinking poison and the king got stabbed by Hamlet.

My favorite part of the play was all the intense scenes because they had lots of drama in them and they were full with action like for example: They would kill, they would fight, they would die, bleed, drink poison, and all that really cool stuff. There were other parts that were cool like that but that was my favorite of all the other ones because their times where you couldn’t believe your friend so it was really. You should go see it because it is awesome and a onetime experience you won’t get to live again.

My favorite part of the play of Hamlet was when Ophelia went mad because she made it seem like it was real.

My favorite part is when they had the sword fight because if a normal person did it they will hit each other with the sword when they’re not trying to hit each other and it will take a lots of practice.

Day 59 - Tomb Excavation

This morning was a nice, but cool morning. As we came into class we were warmed up because it was nice and toasty in our class. We unpacked all of our stuff and started calendar math. We would have originally had music class today, but there was a fourth grade play we had to go to. This play was about Thanksgiving. In the play there were many songs and it was really cute and funny. At one point the turkeys came out with protest signs saying things like, “Eat sweet potatoes instead or turkey!” and “Kiss my giblets!” That was the funniest part in my opinion. After the assembly we helped put chairs away as usual. It gets done so fast when everyone helps out! So once every chair was hung and put away, we walked back up to our classroom. When we got back it was about 10:30. We started today’s daily math. Today we got to work with our appointment wheels. We did some work on dividing fractions again. Then it was time for break.

At break we saw our friends and hung out for the short time we had. When break was over, we closed the wall and went back to math for another 10 minutes. We moved onto language arts next. Today we finished up the writing on our special moment and drew a small picture. We worked on that until it was time for lunch.

When we got back from lunch we did social studies. Our desks were all rearranged for some activity we were going to do. We read a little and then got partners to do the activity. Then we had to go and do jobs. Then we went home for the day.

Day 58 - Fliperroo Number 2!

This morning in class we walked into our classroom and unpacked our necessities for today. Everyone started on today’s calendar math and worked on it until it was time to go to PE. In PE we did bowling again. We did fitness bowling today, instead of bingo again. Fitness bowling is where you get a paper with a key and on it is the numbers 1-10 and it is also had SPARE and STRIKE written on it. So when you take your two turns then you add up them up and get the sum. You take the sum and find where it is on your key. When you find it on your key you do the small action or activity for however long it says. It was really fun! Then it was time to go back up to the classroom. When we got back up to the classroom, we did daily math. In math we continued on how to divide fractions. Then it was break time.

At break we had another birthday today. We got juice, cupcakes and a napkin. It was really yummy and a good snack for people who didn’t have one. Then we moved onto the science questions that we had. We actually had only 5 questions but we didn’t finish until lunch time.

When we got back from lunch we did social studies. We read a little about what this new chapter is about. We did a paper about what we think certain objects are and where they came from and why they are used. That’s all we did. We moved onto language arts next. We got a paper on how to make a sentence that is complete and not at start-stop sentence. We also did another fact and opinion paper/paragraph. When we finished that we watched another Shakespeare video. We watched it all the way up to jobs. So we did jobs and then pack stack and vac. We then went home for the day.

Day 57 - Welcome Back

We are finally back, to school from our long thanksgiving break. It was sort of unexpected because of the snow. So this morning we came in and got our stuff unpacked. We were getting everything back on track again. So we did our calendar math and then at 9:04 we went to PE. In PE we did bowling again. We actually did bowling bingo. How to play bowling bingo is you get a bingo card. You bowl and then however many pins you knock down, is the number you mark off. If you don’t get a strike then you go a second time. If you were to knock down a 6 and a 3, then you cross out six and three. Or you could cross out the sum of the two. When you get numbers in a row or going horizontally or vertically then that is a bingo. So at 9:45, Mr. Steele was at the door ready to take us to our class. When we got back to class we went into today’s lesson in math. Today’s lesson was about how to divide fractions. Mr. Steele showed us a good way on how to do it. We worked on some of that until it was time to have break.

At break we opened the wall and saw all of our friends. We didn’t have snack until after so we just hung out and talked. When break was over we said bye to our friends and then closed the wall. Then we did science. Everyone got their own little flower and a long piece of packing tape. We put the tape sticky side up. We stuck certain important parts of the flower to the tape. Then we flipped the tape over onto a piece of paper. You would have to push it down just to make sure it stuck well enough. That’s all we did in science, plus a paper on the flower that we dissected. Then the bell rang for lunch.

We had to stay in 8 minutes extra because that’s how much time we owed. When the timer went off for us, we went outside to recess. Then lunch also. After we came back from lunch, we did social studies. In social studies we got an end of the unit quiz. By the time we finished the quiz it was about 2:30! We only had a full hour left of the day! We got to watch some videos for Shakespeare so we are sort of prepared for this coming Thursday at the play. When those videos were done, it was 3:00. Then we talked about the difference between opinion and fact. It sort of tied into writing because we might be writing an essay soon that is a persuasive essay. We were going to have to use facts and opinions in it. Then it was time for jobs. We did jobs and then pack stack and vac. Then we went home.

Day 56 - Snowy day

This morning was a chilly, snowy day. Almost everyone was in bug puffy jackets with boots and gloves. Most people woke up this morning to see a white yard and nice snow falling gently to the ground. Same with while we were at school! When we opened up our binders and started calendar math the snow kept on coming! A lot of people were gone today due to vacations. So we had music today. At 9:04 we went down the hall to the music room. In music we did some reading on a composer, Mozart. We did the small little test after it too. We also did a game called drop the needle. Mrs. Frank would play a song and we had to try to guess what composer, composed it. When it was 9:45 we had to go back to our class. When we got back we finished up the daily math. Then we got a math test. The math test took up time until it was break.

At break we met up with all of our friends. Some people were talking about the snow and how excited they were about it. When it was 11:10 we sat down and had snack. Some people went over their test and others finished up the test. Then at 11:30 we started science. In science today we were going to do some plant transpiration and go get a plant from outside, but since it is snowing we are just doing some reading. We read three pages in the science book. We read for about 40 minutes. Then it was time to go to recess and lunch.

When we got back from lunch we did social studies. We got in groups of four and then we did an assignment. We had to draw sort of a picture about the land features of a certain area. Then we did language arts. In language arts we did some work on our homework from over the weekend. When we finished talking about it, we read a story out of Houghton Mifflin. The story was called “Alone, against the sea” Then we wrote down some notes

Day 55 - Multiplication of Fractions Algorithm

Yay! It’s Friday! This morning we came in and unpacked. We did our calendar math until it was 9:13. At 9:13 we went to library. In library we mostly had checkout time. Mrs. Joseph told us about the different kinds of fiction genres. She also told us that she might assign us a book report with a certain genre. So the paper we were using to find research databases was done. Except some people hadn’t finished so instead of getting checkout time and reading time, they had to finish that. So once it was time to go back up to our class, we lined up. Mr. Steele took us up to our class again. Then when we got there, we finished the calendar math. When we finished the math we moved onto our daily math. Then it was time for break!

Today we finally got to have break with the other class. From now on, to keep our floors, computers and room clean, we are having snack after break. Instead of having science right after break, we are doing math. We had to make another algorithm poster but for multiplying fractions. So we had to decorate it and make it neat and perfect. Everyone was working hard to get it done today. Then the bell rang for recess. Today at recess we got to play elimination. It was fun!

When we came back from lunch we did science. We did it now since we couldn’t do it earlier. We actually had to do a test on the unit. It was about all the things we learned lately. Then we did a writing thing. We are going to be writing about anything interesting that happens. We worked a little on our design a scene project too. Then it was time for jobs and to pack up and go home. Have a good weekend.

Day 54 - End of Hamlet

This morning in class we walked up the back stairs and then walked into our classroom. We unpacked our backpack from all of its contents. Then we started on our calendar math. We didn’t have any specialist today so we worked on daily math and our calendar math. We also went over homework over the time too. We needed to work on some math because we had a lot to learn. We were supposed to go to computer lab at ten o’clock. We didn’t go to computer lab at that time but at ten thirty. When we got to computer lab we are going to learn about Microsoft excel. We learned how to make graphs and how to find the average of things on the computer. It was really cool! We worked all the way up until it was our break time.

We didn’t get to have our break with the other class again. We came back for break too late so we didn’t have time to open the wall. But then we did science. We got our cucumbers out of the water and the celery leaves were red. For some people the celery stick gained weight and for others it lost weight. Then it was time for lunch so we went down to lunch.

We ate lunch and then had recess. When we came back from lunch and recess we did social studies. In social studies we did some work on a hypothesis for why people lived in certain parts of China. Then we read the last chapter of hamlet. Once we finished the book we got to make our own scene of hamlet. We could make it any time setting and any scene from the book. So we did that until it was time to pack up and do jobs. That was the end of our day.

Day 53 - Vision and hearing

This morning in class, we came in and unpacked. We did our calendar math this morning and then at 9:05 we went to music class. In music we had a substitute. I don’t know his name but he had a guitar. It was a handmade guitar. He told us a little about himself. He makes his own guitars or he makes them to sell. They were so cool! Then we played a game. It was called, “Spot the beat” We played that the whole music time. What you do to play is you make one person a detective and one person the bodyguard. There is also a person that is the beat starter. The detective and the bodyguard step out of the room. The beat starter starts the beat and then we follow along. While we start, the bodyguard makes sure the detective isn’t able to see who started the beat. Then we call the detective in and then he or she tries to see who started the beat. They get only three tries. So we played that all the way until it was time to go back to the class. When we got back we did daily math.

At break time the other class had to go to the hearing and vision tests. So we had another break without them. Then we had to cut our break short since we had to go to the vision and hearing tests too. When we came back we did science. In science we got celery sticks and then put them in red colored water (food coloring). We were testing to see if the color would go into the celery or if it would even suck anything up at all.

Then it was time for lunch. At lunch recess it was really rainy. When we came back we did social studies. We did social studies all the way until the day was done.

Day 52 - Tons of bugs

Good morning! Today we walked into our classroom we unpacked our backpacks and pulled out our binders. We sat at our desks and started on calendar math. At 9:04 we went down to PE. We did bowling again. Mr. Kolhwes was there again. Mrs. Kolhwes is at Islandwood with the fifth graders. So she will be gone until they get back. Again, we did groups and we bowled for the whole PE time. It was a fun time! So when we got back it was 9:45. Today at 10:00 we had the bug exhibit. So we did calendar math and some daily math until it was time to go to the exhibit. The exhibit was in the art and science room. When we got there we sat criss-cross and he had a power point up. There were many bugs everywhere in cages. There were also labeled boxes of dead insects. We sat down and he introduced himself. He told us a ton of things about bugs. Then he took out the bugs and held them in his hands to show us what they looked like. The bugs he showed us were a scorpion, tarantula, skunk beetles, millipede, and a centipede. We had to go back up to our class at 11:00.

When we got back we had break. We couldn’t have break with Mrs. Malloy’s class because at break time they had to go to the bug exhibit. So we had break alone for the second time this week. Then we did daily math. We didn’t have time this morning so we did it now. We worked on math all the way up until lunch time.

At lunch we got to sit wherever we wanted because the fifth graders were gone. When we came back from lunch we did social studies. In social studies we finished up gluing and making our group posters. We worked on that all the way up until 2:00. At two o’clock we read one chapter from Hamlet. We only have one chapter left and we will finish it tomorrow. Then we did a Charlotte Doyle quiz. People who haven’t finished the question paper worked on that first. We worked on that until it was time for jobs. We did jobs then P.S.V and lined up to go home.

Day 51 - Plants

This morning in class we came in and unpacked our stuff. We started to work on our calendar math but then at 9:04 we lined up for PE. We walked down to PE and we had a substitute. It was Mr. Kolhwes. Today in PE we did bowling. We set up pins and then got into groups. We bowled a lot and had a lot of fun. The bowling balls were rubber and greasy. It was a little gross but, still fun. Then it was 9:45 so we had to line up and go back to our classroom. When we got back to the class we did our daily math. In math today we learned some new things on multiplying fractions.

Then it was 10:59 and the wall opener ran to the wall and put the lever in. Then… it turned 11:00!!! Everyone ran to see their friends and have snack. We had a lot of fun snacking and talking. Then it was 11:10 so we had to close the wall. So we sat back down at our desks and were ready to learn again. So we would have normally done science right now but instead we did language arts. So we got our Houghton Mifflin and read the Charlotte Doyle story. We also got four written questions to work on while we read it. Then it was time to go to lunch and recess.

When we got back from lunch we did social studies right away. We worked on what we did last time. We continued cutting out the paper and cardboard. We finished social studies at 2:00. Then we read hamlet until about 2:30. Then we did science. We watched this video on how plants eat and live and a lot of other things. So we watched the science video. Then we worked on our Charlotte Doyle story until it was time to do jobs. Then we packed up and went home.

Day 50 - DANCE IS TONIGHT

Today is the fiftieth day of school! This morning we came in and unpacked everything we needed for school. We worked on calendar math until we had to head down to the library. In library we got the paper from last time. The research database paper that was about Babylon is what we worked on the whole time while we were there. We also had about 10 minutes for checkout out time. Some people got some really good books and others didn’t get anything. Then we came up back to class once library was over. So we came up and finished up our calendar math for the day. We went over calendar math and then moved onto the daily math. In our daily math we got to have our appointment wheel. It was our number 10. We worked on daily math until it was time for break.

Because of some roughhousing we couldn’t open up the wall today. We had to make sure and maintain our behavior or we would lose our privilege for opening the wall. So we had break alone and ate our snack alone. Then we did science. In science we looked at the seeds we had from a long time ago. The seeds had sprouted and grown a lot. When we first put them in, they were just little seeds. Now they are big roots. We did some observations and then looked at a few through the microscopes. Then it was time to go to lunch and recess.

Once recess and lunch were over we came in and did social studies right away. In social studies we worked on some questions about China. It was about the land and the area they were in. We had to cut out and make a little model of the land. We worked on social studies up until three o’clock. Then we got a climb or die quiz. As soon as we finished that small quiz we had to get another paper to go with a story called, “The true confessions of Charlotte Doyle” Some people started the reading but others still continued to work on the climb or die questions. Then at 3:20 it was time for us to do our jobs. So everyone did jobs and then we had to pack up. We packed up and got in line ready to go home.

Day 48 - Intro to Ancient China

Good morning!!! This morning was a chilly cold morning! We came in and unpacked our stuff. We started on our calendar math. We did the daily shape, counting tape, daily problem, and daily conversions. So when it was 9:04 we headed down to PE for dance class. We had a lot of fun doing the same dances from yesterday. It’s really a fun week, when we get to do the dance week. So after we practiced all of our dances it was time to go back up to our classroom and get to work. So once we came back, we went over our calendar math. Then it was time to move on to our daily math. We did a new kind of transformation with our desks. We had four groups of eight or seven. So we worked on this group assignment for a while and then we had break.

So we had break and talked a lot. Once break was done we moved onto science. In science we had to answer some questions and see how much we know about cockroaches. We also answered a few questions about some other bugs too. We had to try to guess what kind of bug they were and answer things about what they do. Then when we finished those questions we had to leave for lunch.

When we came back from lunch we went right into social
studies. In social studies we got all new stuff. We are now going to learn about china. Then we got new paper work to go into our social studies binder. We answered a few questions about our environment. Then we moved onto a writing assessment. We got a prompt and we started to write. Then it was time to do pack stack and vac. We also had to do jobs of course. Then we went home for the day.

Day 47 - Dance week

Welcome back from the weekend!!! This morning in class we came in and got our seats. We unpacked our backpack and then sat down and did calendar math. We did calendar math until it was 9:04. We went down to PE and the other class was already there. We had dance week, this week. We all came in found a spot on the floor. The music DJ guy told us some songs we will be doing. We did the cupid shuffle, the something slide… I forgot the name. We also did the wickey wow, wow, and the jitterbug bug jog. It is a great work out and a ton of fun! We also have dance week tomorrow too. So when it was over we went back up to the classroom, hot and sweaty. So we came up and went over our calendar math. Then we did daily math. After maybe 45 minutes of math we had break.

At break we had snack and then hung out with friends and talked. So right when break was done we got to do science. In science we got the cockroaches out and then we tried to choose which one we had before. Then we got to do the experiments that we made for the roaches. We worked on our experiments until it was time to go to recess and lunch.

When we came back from lunch we went right into socials studies. In social studies we had to go back and do everything we had not done in our social studies binder. We did that up until about 2:30. Then for half an hour we read Hamlet. We moved on to Houghton Mifflin. We finished up a story about the two men that climbed Mount Everest. We only had a little to read so we started to read another story next. It was called, the confessions of Charlotte Doyle. Then it was time to pack up and do jobs. So we did that and then went home for the day.

Day 46 - Bullying Video

This morning in our warm classroom, on this cool day we came in and did our calendar math right away. So we had to work on calendar math until about 9:15. At 9:15 we headed down to library. In library we had to do a lot of things. We went into the computer lab and did some quiz/trivia about some social studies stuff we had been studying. So we went to our assigned computer and then we worked on those little trivia questions. After we did some things on that site, we had some checkout time. So everyone either got a good book or just sat down and read some books in different places. So after we had checkout time it was time to go back to our classroom. Then when we got back we did our daily math. Since we had library later we don’t have as much time for math. So we also got a math test. We worked on the math test until it was time to have break.

At break we had snack and talked a lot. Then we finished up the math test. We moved onto science after everyone finished the math test. In science we didn’t get to play with the cockroaches but we worked on making an experiment to do with them. Then after we finished we had to head down to lunch.

When we got back from lunch we did social studies. In social studies we did an end of the chapter test. When we finished it we watched a video on bullying. I think it really helped for a lot of people. Then when we finished the video we had a quiet work period until the end of the day. Then it was time to pack, stack and vac. So we did that until it was time to go home for the weekend.

Day 45 - Assyrians and Babylonians

Good morning! Welcome back to class! So we climbed up the back stairs and then walked into our classroom. We got our chairs and unpacked and were ready to learn. So we did calendar math and word of the day as always. We did our daily problem, counting tape, daily shape, and daily depositor. So while we did that Mr. Steele came around and checked to see who had homework and who didn’t. About 70% had homework and 30% didn’t. We are hoping that we will soon get 100% homework. That day will come soon though. So we did calendar math and some daily math until it was time to go to computer lab. At 10:00 we lined up and headed down to computer lab. In computer lab Mr. Steele showed us some new things on Microsoft office PowerPoint. It was really cool because we learned stuff that most people never knew about. So we worked on stuff in the computer lab until it was time to go back to the class for break.

At break we had snacks and did talking for our 10 minutes. Once those ten minutes passed we went back to math. What we did in math today was our algorithm posters. We started them for the first time to today. We had to finish them today. So we had to work quickly. We only had an hour to finish the whole poster. We were going to make them within our group and then vote on them at the end. Who’s ever got the most votes would get $400 for the whole group. We got to figure out how to split it. So then it was time to go to recess. Most groups had not finished so they stayed in and worked on it. Then after a while we had to go to lunch.

At lunch they were serving a chicken sandwich, hamburger, cheeseburger, chicken nuggets and pizza sticks. Then once we came back from lunch we did social studies. We had to do a lot of reading about four or five pages. Then we answered questions about it too in our social studies binder. After about an hour if social studies we went and finished up the dinosaur video from the other day. It was a really, really good and interesting video. Then we moved onto Hamlet. We read a chapter in it and it was a good chapter too.

Day 43 - Fractions

This morning in class we came in and unpacked our stuff. Then it was 9:04 so we headed down to PE. In PE it was the girls turn to do the high jump, AKA scissor kick. So about only 5 girls did the jumping thing. It was really fun for people to watch and do it. We are having a championship tomorrow for all the last finalists. So we did the high kick until it was time to go back to our classroom. When we got back up to our class we pulled out our calendar math again and finished that up. Then we went over last night’s homework. Then we did an Activote test for math. It was only five questions but some of them were longer so it took a while. Then when we finished the test it was time for break.

So the wall opener opened the wall and then everyone ran to their friends. Once it was 11:10 we all were in our seats ready to move on with the day. We did science after break. In science we did some reading and more looking at bugs in pictures. We answered some questions about what we were talking about. Then we learned how to handle the cockroaches. We talked about that until it was time to go to lunch.

At lunch we had some good yummy food. Then we had recess. No one is allowed on the lower field because it is always wet. But maybe if it dries up then we will be able to use it again. So once we came back from lunch we did social studies. In social studies the last group did their small play. Then we did some reading. Followed by a paper that went with our reading. Then we moved onto reading Hamlet because we haven’t read it for a while. After we read some of Hamlet we finished up the rest of the video from yesterday. It was very, very interesting and cool and even funny sometimes. Then it was time to do jobs. So we did jobs and then pack, stack, and vac. Then we went home.

Day 42 - Mechanical Dioramas

Welcome back from candy and fun all weekend! Now we have to get back to business! Most people this morning were pretty tired from trick or treating last night. Since Halloween was on a Sunday that was the only time we could go trick or treating. Well you could go on Saturday but no one would probably have any candy out. ANYWAYS... This morning in class we came in and unpacked all of our stuff. So we did some calendar math and then it was time to go to music. So we lined up in the back of the room and walked down to music. In music we did some reading on a composer named Hayden. Then we did questions on them. So then it was time to go back to our classroom. In class we started some new calendar math pages. Then we worked on our daily math. Then at 11 o’clock it was time to have break.

So at break most people had candy for snack. Then we went on to science. In science we looked at pictures of bugs and named the parts of the bugs. Then we read some things about more bugs. Whew! A lot of bugs! So then when we started to read it was actually time to go to lunch and recess. At recess today we played battlefield in the gym.

So when we came back from lunch we finished up the reading in science. And then we answered some questions for what we read. So by the time that was done it was 2:00. Then we moved onto social studies. In social studies we did the plays finally. Everyone did there little skit and then we watched other peoples skits too. Then we watched a video about dinosaurs 4.4 billion years ago. It was also sort of about earth. So we watched that until it was time to do jobs. So we did jobs and then it was time to pack stack and vac. Then we lined up and went home.

Day 41 - Halloween Party

Today is the Halloween party at school! A lot of people brought a lot of food. We had food like cupcakes, chips, candy, drinks, and cookies. Then we did calendar math. We did calendar math for about maybe twenty or thirty minutes. Then we went over it with Mr. Steele. We went over the daily shape and the daily math problem. Then we moved onto our daily math. In math we went over some review and then did a few extra things in math. We worked on math all the way up until it was time to have break time.

So we had our snacks and then did science. In science we did a small little experiment. We had a petri dish and then we put water in and little seeds. So we would watch the seeds over a couple days and they are supposed to grow. So when we finished science it was time to head out to lunch.

So we had some good food and a fun recess. When we got back to the class we moved right into social studies. In social studies we worked on our stuff for the small play we are doing. We worked on lines and some more props. Then we moved onto Houghton Mifflin. In Houghton Mifflin we read a story about two men that climbed Mount Everest and lived. Then when we finished the story it was time to go get our costumes on! Then swe had an awesome party! But then we had to go home. Have fun trick ot treating!

Day 40 - Secret Garden

This morning in class we came up the back stairs and walked into our class. In class we unpacked our stuff and then sat down. Everyone pulled out their calendar math and wrote down the word of the day and the two factors of the day. Then we finished up calendar math. After that we worked on our daily math. Today we are supposed to go to computer lab at about 10:00 but we ended up staying and finishing up math. So we did math all the way up until it was time to have break.

So in break we had delicious snacks and fun conversations. So then we moved onto science after break. In science we saw this video about nature and how they survive and many, many other things. It was actually funny sometimes because the actors in it had some humor so we had some fun with watching it. It showed things like flowers growing and bugs and how they make homes. It was really a good video. It was pretty long so we watched it all the way up to lunch time.

So we headed to lunch and then recess. Today at lunch we had chicken nuggets, pizza sticks, hamburgers, cheeseburgers, and chicken burgers. We were able to get an apple strudel as a sweet treat. So people got a good healthy balanced diet. Then when we came back from lunch we finished the last bit of the movie. We wrote some answers to questions from the movie. Then we did social studies. So in social studies we worked on designing the set and costumes for the small play. Then we made props. We did social studies for a long time. We did it all the way up until 3:00. Then we read Hamlet. So we read Hamlet until it was time to do jobs. Then we did pack stack and vac. Then it was time to go home.

Day 39 - Mini Pond Safari

School is now in session! Today in class we came in and worked on our calendar math. So we did that and got settled for the day. Then we headed down to Music. In music we did e spider and the fly music sounds. We had five different groups and then each group got a box of instruments and a paper with a line from the book. We would make sounds with whatever happened in the line. So we did that for our whole music time. Then at the end of music we did an earthquake drill. We would go to the middle of the music room and kneel and cover our heads. Then after the “earthquake” we would go out to the field and line up like in the fire drill. So after that we went back up to our classroom. When we got back we did daily math. In math we went over our homework and then did a few extra math problems. So once we finished math it was time to have break.

So we had break. Then we moved onto science. What we did all the way up until lunch was look at little critters under the microscope. Mr. Steele got something so everyone could see the little microscopic animals. So we headed down to lunch and recess.

Then when we came back from class we did social studies right away. In social studies we are doing a really fun activity. We are almost doing a small play but we have 7 groups and we do different kinds of things. We did social studies up until 1:50.Then we did jobs and pack stack and vac. Then we went home at 2:00.

Day 38 - Paramecium

We are now back, on to our normal schedule! We had three days with early release at noon. Most people are sad to see it go but still, it’s nice to have a normal schedule again. So today in class we got out our calendar math and did that. Calendar math in the morning is a regular routine now. So when it was time to go to PE we lined up in the back of the classroom. So today in PE we did the high jump. Well at least the boys did. The girls get to do it next week. So while some boys did the high jump, other people did some other kinds of jumping games. One was to see how high you jump, and the other was to see how far you could jump. We also could do the animal grabbing game, where there are three animals and you race to see who can grab them first. So after a while most people sat down to watch some of the boys do the high jump. Then Mr. Steele came in and took us back to our classroom. When we got back to the classroom we went over the calendar math and homework too. Then it was time for break.

At break we had snack and caught up with all the news from our friends. So once we finished break we finished up our daily math. Once we finished that up, we moved onto science. In science we were put into three different stations again. We would do either microscopes, a scientific drawing, or dissect a lima bean. For the microscopes we would take some of the pond water and look at it under the microscope. We had to see what we could spot in the water. Some groups saw some pretty neat things. If you were doing the scientific drawing then you would have to copy a picture of a paramecium. We had to label it too. If you were doing the lima bean then you would take a lima bean and then suck on it for about five minutes. We would take the lima bean out of our mouth after five minutes and then take the shell off of it. Then we would split it open and do some investigating on what was inside it. So then by the time all that was done it was time to go outside.

So we went outside and had recess. After forty five minutes we went inside for our twenty minute lunch. The once lunch was over we came inside and we went straight to social studies. In social studies we did another end of the chapter Activote quiz. But we still got two questions on paper. By the time we finished the quiz it was about 2:30. After social studies we moved onto reading Hamlet. So we read it to about almost three o’clock. Then we worked on our climb or die story until the end of the day. Then we did jobs and pack stack and vac. That was the end of our day and then it was time to go home.

Day 37 - Final Half Day

Welcome back from the weekend! We get to start off Monday with a half day! So this morning in class we came in and did our calendar math. Mr. Steele put up our daily shape and our daily division problem. So then it was time to go down to PE. In PE we did some stretches because we were going to do some jumping. We jumped over hurdles and cones. We did that the whole PE time. Then when we came back from PE we went over our calendar math. Then we did some of our daily math. So after about an hour of daily math it was time for break. At break we had our yummy snacks and talked up a storm. When our break was done we did some catch-up time. We could work on either our Climb or Die essay, or social studies comic, or simile art. So we worked on those until it was time to leave for the day. So then at 11:50 we did our jobs and then packed up.

Day 36 - Half Day 02

Good morning! We have another half day today! We also have another half day on Monday too but then that it the last half day. I believe we have more conferences later in the year but not for a long while again. So this morning in class we came in and unpacked our backpacks. We did calendar math until it was time to go to library. At 9:13 we went down to library. In library we did the same thing as last time. We went into the computer lab and then did the research databases again. Then we got out the paper we used last time. On that paper we wrote down two things about the website we went on. Then we got about 10 minutes for checkout. So some people checked out books and some just read for those 10 minutes. Then we went back up to the classroom. So when we got back up to the classroom we had this really, really long talk about safety because someone in our class was approached so we had this talk and I think it helped a lot for some people. So then it was time for break. So after we had break we did math. In math we got our new Bits and Pieces book. It is the second one. So we played a game with fractions and decimals. Then it was time to pack up and go home.

Day 35 - Half Day 01

Today is a half day! We get out at noon. The reason why we are getting out so early is because we have to do conferences. So this morning we came into class and unpacked our stuff. We didn’t have specialists today because we only have them on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. On Thursday we have computer lab. And Friday we have library. So we did our calendar math and we headed down to the computer lab at 9:54. So in the computer lab we worked on a power point that was for our parents at conferences. We did that all the way up to about 11:30. Then we went to our classroom. We also were able to go down to the lunch room for sack lunches. So we worked on simile art for the rest of the day. At 11:50 we did our jobs and then did pack stack and vac. That was the end of our really short day.

Day 34 - Conference prep

In this cool foggy morning we came to school ready for learning and fun. We climbed up the back staircase and arrived in our classroom. When we came in we noticed that Mr. Steele had brought in some more Halloween decorations. There was another black light and a glowing bat on the wall. So we did our calendar math and then it was time to go to music. So we lined up and headed down to music. In music we finished up our Handel video. In the video we had about forty minutes of it and then for the last five minutes Mrs. Frank read us a book. It was called “The spider and the fly”. Then she showed us a couple of things we will do next music class. So we came back up to class and went over homework and then did our daily math.

Then it was time for break. So we had break and had our snacks. When break was over we did a math test. We set up our conference stuff too. We did all that up until lunchtime.

At lunch we had turkey gravy mashed potatoes. Some people got that but others didn’t. So when we arrived back from recess and lunch we had a survey to do. It was an anonymous test about our lives. It asked questions about what happens at home and at school. Then when we finished that, we did our jobs. Then we packed up and went home.

Day 33 - Scary Room

This morning in class we came in and unpacked. Then we did our calendar math. Then it was time to go to PE. At PE we got to go outside and do some relay type of races and just some fun field games. We could do the animal grab, the hurdles, a race, the ladders, and the cone pickup. When got to stay out for about 40 min and then we had to go back to class. When we got back up to class we went over our homework. Well actually we did our calendar math for a little and then went over homework. So we did some daily math as usual and worked on that until it was time for break.

At break we had our yummy snacks and did a lot of talking. After break we would have normally done science but for a little we kept working on our daily math. After about 15 more minutes of working on that we put our stuff away and then moved onto science. Then at about 11:20 we watched a video on cells. It showed when microscopes were first invented and how they worked back then. It also showed some real cells and how they can use cells to make skin! It was a little gross but really cool! So then by the time the video was done it was time to go to lunch and recess.

Most people stayed in the classroom and helped set up Halloween decorations. Our classroom has turned into an awesome Halloween room. We have spider webs, streamers, and pumpkins, and banners and it is very, very cool! We also have a black light and glow in the dark fangs! So we went to lunch after the decorating. Then when we came back we did social studies. We had magazines and would cut out pictures for certain things. Then we went down to the computer lab. We were there up until 3:00. We worked on our bridge to Terabithia essay. And then we came back up to class. Then we looked at what the costumes design and the theme set of Hamlet would be when we see it. It is an old and modern theme. A little bit militaristic. Then we got five minutes to finish up our social studies. Then it was time for jobs and then time for pack stack and vac. Then we went home!

Day 32 - Cells

Today in class we came in and unpacked all of our stuff. So the first thing we did today in our new week was do our calendar math. We did our word of the day too. Then at 9:04 we headed down to music. Mrs. Frank was back! We had a substitute all last week. So in music we watched a movie on what Handel. It was a pretty long movie so we had to finish it next music class. Also Mrs. Frank did some trivia and if you were to answer it right then you got some yummy skittles. Then we lined up and went back to class. When we were in our seats we did our daily math. Then we went over our homework. After that it was break.

Then at break we had snack and did a lot of talking. So once the wall closed and everyone was at level one, we moved onto science. In science we did some more microscope work. We did a wet slide. We got a leaf and then added some pond water and then looked at it. There was a brick sort of pattern and a lot of cells moving around. It was gross and cool! We did rotations today in science. Each group would rotate between the computers, the microscopes, and catching up on things at your desk. So we did one rotation before lunch and the rest after lunch.

So when we came back from lunch we did the rest of the rotations. Then we did social studies. We finished up what we did on Friday. So if you had not finished the social studies then you have to do it for homework. So after we finished up all that we moved onto reading Hamlet. Then it was time for jobs. So we did jobs for five minutes and then did pack stack and vac. Then it was time to go home.

Day 31 - Ribbon of LIfe

It’s Friday! This morning in class we came in and unpacked. So we did our calendar math and our word of the day. Today we had library at 9:13. In library we still had to finish the paper with the rules and the paper with that. Some people had a messy paper so they had to start over. Once you go the paper filled out you would go out and get on the computer and then wrote down the call number. So when you finished everything you would get on the computer and search some databases. So then it was time to go back up to the classroom. So we came back up and then we did math. We did some daily math and then did a math goal paper for conferences. Conferences are coming up this coming week. We have three half days because of the conferences. So we did all that and then Mr. Steele told us that today was his wife’s birthday! It was also Leo’s birthday and a couple of people’s pet’s birthdays. So we sang happy birthday for all 4 people and pets. Then it was break.

At break we got cupcakes from Leo’s birthday. So at break we had yummy cupcakes and our other snack. Then we had to do some more math because we didn’t finish it all. After math we did science. In science we learned about cells. Then we watched a small animated clip about the characteristics that living things have. So by the time that was done it was time to go to lunch.

So we went to recess then lunch. When we came back from lunch we did social studies right away. We did a thing where we would have pictures and we had to try to guess if it went to a certain spot and what kind of subject there was. So after that we got to read Hamlet. After we read Hamlet we talked about it for a while. Then we got our Houghton Mifflin books out and finished the packet from yesterday. Then Mr. Steele showed us a couple of preview’s on YouTube that were different kinds of Hamlet’s. So then we worked on a small essay about the story “Climb or die”. So we did that until the end of the day then it was time for jobs and then time to go home. Have a good weekend!

Day 30 - Capture the Flag

Good morning! Today is a beautiful sunny day! So in class today we came in and unpacked our stuff. Then we did calendar math and our word of the day. We don’t have specialists today so we had to work on math until it was time to head to the computer lab. When we got into the computer lab it was soooo hot! It felt like 100 degrees! So in computer lab we finished up our bridge to Terabithia essay and we did that up until it was break time. But in computer lab we were loud and wasted five minutes so we had to stay in our seats and do math until we used up our five minutes then we had a five minute break.

At break we had snack and had a short talk with friends. Then we did math for a little while again because we have a lot to catch up on. Mr. Steele was telling us that we need to do extra math to get good at division so we can figure out the new math. We are having some problems with multiplication and long division so we need to work on that so we are doing a lot now in math. But then after that we did science. The groups that had not finished the science on the microscopes finished that. By the time we finished that it was time for lunch.

At recess today we got to play capture the flag outside with Mr. Steele and Mrs. Malloy’s class. It was really, really fun! We had some problems with some mild cheating and it was hard to tell who was on whose team because our classes were mixed up. When we got back from lunch and recess we did social studies. We talked about government and laws in the olden days. So we did a paper for social studies and then that was all. Then we moved onto Houghton Mifflin. We read a story called “Climb or die” by Edward Myers. Then we got a packet for the story. But we read 1 and a half of a scene in Hamlet and then we got to work on our packet for the story. Then it was time to do jobs and pack stack and vac.

Day 29 - DNA

This morning in class we came in and unpacked our Binders and books. Then we did our calendar math and word of the day. We went to music class at 9:04. So in music we had a substitute because Mrs. Frank has been gone since Monday. We don’t know why but I think she will be back soon. The teacher’s name was Mr. Ayotte. So we practiced our songs that were, Battle Hymn of the republic, Grand old flag, and Star spangled banner. After we practiced the music we had to do a dance. We did some clapping, some snapping, and knee slapping. And we also did jazz hands! Then we practiced some music notes and then it was time to go back to class. So when we got back to class we went over our homework and then did some other math. We got our math test back and we went over a little bit of that too. So then it was time for break.

Mrs. Malloy’s class got in trouble for talking so we had break on our own. Then when we finished snack and then moved onto science. In science we watched a video that was all about DNA and about corn and other stuff. Then we talked about genes and how you can clone certain things. Then it was time for lunch and recess. At lunch today they are selling popcorn! Remember to bring money sometime!

When we came back from lunch and recess we went straight to Hamlet. Then we did some work on our hidden children essay. We did that until the end of the day. Then it was time for jobs and then time to go home! That was our short Wednesday!

Day 28 - Timed Run

Today in class we came in and unpacked. We did our word of the day and daily math. So we went to PE at 9:04am. In PE we did the timed run. The goal for sixth grade was 11 minutes. Most people got a little past the goal. The highest we could go was 25 minutes. So right when we came back up from PE we got a math test.

Then it was time for break. It was Jessica’s birthday today! She brought in cupcakes. We got to have the cupcakes while it was break. So we had our snacks and cupcakes and were satisfied. So after break we did science. We got an assessment for science and we also did microscopes. So while two groups did microscopes other groups worked on the assessment. We switched off doing that. We had a paper that we brought with us and we wrote what we saw in the microscopes. We tested the letter E and a colored mini photo. We also had to look at a feather but most people didn’t have time to finish all of that. So we finished what we could up until it was lunch time.

When we returned from lunch we did a social studies quiz. We got two questions on paper and then we did a lot of multiple choice questions with our ActiVotes. So we worked on that for almost an hour. So after we finished those questions we went outside to read Hamlet in our old Terabithia reading spot. Then we came back up and did a little bit of Houghton Mifflin and then did jobs. Then it was the end of the day.

Day 27 – Sea Monkeys

This morning we unpacked our stuff. Today we had P.E at 9:05.so we went to P.E. and today in P.E we played pop up. We played it because it was free day today. we played almost the whole time of P.E. so then we got back and went over home work. After we went over our daily math. And then it was time for break. We had just been un punished and so then we could see and talk with Mollys class. But during break Mr.Steele put up some sea monkeys over the over head. And then Mr.Steele put some light near the sea monkeys and they were attracted to the light. It was so weird because after he took out the water they moved very fast but then they died and they went back into salt crystals. But for the ones that were still alive Mr Steele put back some water so they could stay alive and they wouldn’t die . then we went to lunch resses.

Then we came back and did social studies. Then we read hamlet. And then we did one half on computers and the other have got to do simile art and do brige to terribithia. Sort of a catch up time. And then we traded jobs.

Day 26 - Jag-a-thon!

This morning, in class we came and unpacked our stuff. Today we had library at 9:15. So we went to library. In library we got back a paper we had been working on almost ever since the first day of school because we don’t have library often. So we finished those papers and then had 10 minutes for checkout. So when we got back from library we went over our homework. So after that we did daily math and then it was time for the jag-a-thon! So we went out did some stretching and then we ran for about 25 minutes. And after we got animal crackers and bottled water. Then we came back and we ate our normal snack and the animal crackers. After we ate we finished up a math problem from this morning.

Then it was lunch time. So at lunch we got to sit where ever we wanted to because we were good yesterday. So today the t-shirt design votes were counted and number 1 and number 2 were the ones to vote between now. When we came back from recess and lunch we did social studies. After we finished that we got our Shakespeare Hamlet books. The words were a little confusing but we will get used to it. So we read one scene and then moved onto our bridge to Terabithia essay and worked on our self evaluation to our essay. Then it was time to do jobs and then we went home! Have a good weekend!

Day 25 - Hamlet

This morning in class we came in and unpacked. We didn’t have any specialist today so we did calendar math and then went over homework. Mr. Steele said that we are taking the MSP in May. He said that we are starting 3 dimensional shapes in May and he said there is a lot of that text in there so we have to hit it hard with the math. It will get hard and very challenging but Mr. Steele thinks we can do it. So we are going to be combining shapes and our normal math when it gets closer to that time. So we went to computer lab at 9:55. So in computer lab we finished our Where I’m from poem and then worked on our Bridge to Terabithia essay. So Mr. Steele showed us how to write type our paper high school and middle school way. So after we came back from lab we had break.

Mr. Steele said he will let us get around and talk but without the wall open. He said if there is no food on the ground we can try normal break again. So we did that and after he went around and examined the floor carefully. Then we moved onto science. We did a lot of talk about what we are going to be doing in science soon. We will be dissecting a squid and using microscopes. So after that it was time for lunch and recess.

At lunch we were able to vote for the t-shirt designs. You can only vote once. So after we came back from recess we did social studies. So we talked about how certain people have certain skills and they would pass on their knowledge to the next generation. So then we watched a video from BBC. It was Hamlet. So we watched it and it was very interesting. Mr. Steele stopped it a lot of times to explain to us what was going on because the language was really old time. So it was harder to understand. We watched all three parts because there were three parts and they were good. So we watched those until the end of the day. At 3:20 we did our jobs and then planner. Then we did pack stack and vac. That was the end of our day.

Day 24 - Picture day

Good morning! This morning was a chilly morning. So today we came in and unpacked. Everyone was dressed up all nice because it was picture day! So at 9:04 we went to PE. Mrs. Malloy’s class came too. We went outside in the cold and practiced the jag-a-thon. So we could run or walk the path to get used to it. So then we came back and did calendar math. So after we were done with that we did some work on math. We learned some new stuff and then worked all the way up to break.

At break we had snack and then chatted. We did science right after break. Mr. Steele found a lot more food on the ground so now we don’t have break with Mrs. Malloy’s class, we have it alone. So in science we got our experiment vials back and we made observations. Some groups had really neat looking observations. Some looked like snails, and some looked like gel! They were pretty cool looking. So we did observations for about 15 minutes and then got a science book. We read in that science book and then answered some questions that go with it. So we worked on that all the way to lunch time. We went out for recess then lunch.

When we came back from lunch, we went straight into our class pictures and single pictures. When we finished the pictures we came back up to the classroom and worked on our Bridge to Terabithia essays. We worked on those until the end of the day. Then we did our jobs and pack stack and vac. Day 23 - Half Substitute

This morning in class we came in and unpacked. We went to PE at 9:04am. In PE we played doctors in the battle field. While everyone was playing the game Mrs. Kolwes called back three people at a time to stretch and do the sit and reach test. That’s all that really happened in PE today. So when we got back to the classroom we did our calendar math and then did some daily math. We didn’t have math homework last night so we didn’t have to go over anything today. But we did learn a lot of new things today during math. We learned about fractions and decimals again because that is a big deal right now. So by the time we finished learning that it was break time.

At break we ate snack and talked. Then after break we got into our science groups. In science we used our packages of dirt and leaves and pebbles to make our little mini pond. Then we got a big bucket and in it were five little bags of finely ground materials. We don’t know what they were but we had to decide whether they were living or non-living. So we did that all the way into lunch time. Mr. Steele told us that we are going to have a substitute after lunch. Her name is Mrs. Thai.

Then we went to lunch and recess. This morning it was very cold but at recess it was pretty hot out. So when we got back from lunch we did a social studies quiz. The quiz was going over what we had learned in the last chapter. Tomorrow we will start a new chapter in social studies. Then for the rest of the day we either got to work on social studies test, name art, Terabithia Essay, simile art, and social studies comic. Then it was time for jobs. Day 22 - Movie Time

This morning in class we came in and unpacked. We have a new student today! Her name is Alyssa. So after she got introduced to the class we went down to music. In music we practiced the Battle Hymn of the Republic. We are doing a lot of practice because we are singing that at some point for the school I believe. So then we went through our big notebook about the composers and worked on the one about Handel. He composed some music that is very popular now in some churches or even movies. We had about ten or fifteen minutes before it was time to go up to the classroom. So with that time we played some of the instruments that were out. Mrs. Frank split us up into two groups again and we played a couple songs each. Then when we got back up to the classroom we went over our new calendar math (now that it is October). Then we went over our homework from the weekend. After we finished that it was break.

At break we all ate our yummy snacks and talked a lot. Then after break Mr. Steele gave us back our essays and he had graded them but not so we could see. He didn’t tell us because we were going to grade our own writing with a rubric. So we got the rubric and looked over it and graded the way we think. By the time we were done with that it was time to go to lunch.

So after we came back from lunch we got to watch Bridge to Terabithia the movie. We got a Venn diagram to use while watching a movie. So after the movie we are going to write a four paragraph essay about what was different from the book and the movie, but we are going to do that another time. After the movie was done we went over the things we found were different and the same. Then Mr. Steele told us about simile art. We choose some similes we found and we illustrate them. We will do that after we finish the essay. So we are going to brainstorm until its job time. So at 3:20 we did jobs. Then it was 3:25 so we did pack stack and vac and went home.

Day 21 - Early Friday

This morning in class is basically a Friday because tomorrow is a long leap day for teachers so we don’t have school. So today we did calendar math and some new math today. This morning we didn’t have specialist. Instead of specialist we had computer lab. So we did math until 9:55. At 9:55 we went to the computer lab. In the computer lab we did more work on our Where I’m from poem. Then he showed us how to use our school email. Then we came back up to the classroom and had break.

In break we had snack and talked. Then we moved onto science. In science Mr. Steele put up a little cup of water and put something in it. We didn’t know what it was so he told us that he will tell us in a little. Then we got some cards that had pictures and the name of the picture. What we did with those was to label them. We either had to decide with our partner that it was living, non living, or undecided. So we did that and then Mr. Steele made three sections on the wall and those sections were each labeled living, nonliving, and undecided. As a class we decided which card goes where. Then we talked about the characteristics that a living thing must have. While we were doing that we had a lot of debates about what was and were not living. Then it was lunch time.

At lunch we ate food and talked and at recess boys played football and girls hung out and talked a lot. When we came back from social studies we did some more work on the Paleolithic times people. Then we did science and then it was the end of the day. So we did our jobs and did pack stack and vac.

Day 20 - Mr. Nash’s last day

Today in class we came in and unpacked. Then we did our daily math and word of the day. When everyone was almost done with calendar math it was 9:04 so we went down for music. In music Mrs. Frank had all of her xylophones and big instruments down. We got separated into two groups and we would play a song off of a paper she had. We did that and we sang the Battle Hymn of the republic and the grand old flag. Then we got to sing the Juanita Jaguars song. The song we haven’t sung in maybe a couple years. A few people did the drums to match the beat with the song. Then we came back up to the classroom. So when we got back Mr. Steele gave us a math test. It was homework last night to study some of the math so you were ready for today’s math check up. So we worked on that for about half an hour or more. Then Mr. Steele came around and collected the papers and then we did a stop light on the test. Then we made a transition from chapter two in our Bits and pieces book to chapter three.
The chapter was called moving between fractions and decimals. We talked about how we can do decimals and fractions and how they relate. Then it was break.

At break we had snack and talked a lot. Then we worked on some math papers with a partner. Then we got more time to work on the science again. So then after a while of working on that we had lunch.

Then we came back from lunch and recess. For the rest of the day we did the science because we had a lot to do. Then it was job time and pack stack and vac. That was the end of the day.

Day 19 - Pottery

This morning in class we came in and unpacked. Today we had PE at 9:04. At PE we did the end of the bike unit test. It was about a four page test. In the test it went over what we had learned during the bike unit. We corrected it together in PE and finished at about 9:50. So when we got back to the classroom Mr. Steele told us that we are going to do some group teaching. Mr. Nash took a part of the class and Mr. Steele took the other half. In those groups we did corrected our homework and then did some extra work on math. He said that we will do this a lot more often when Mr. Nash comes back. OH! I forgot to mention that tomorrow is Mr. Nash’s last day. :( So we are really sad about him leaving. But he will return in January. When he is back we will do a lot more double teaching and sometimes it will be just Mr. Nash teaching.

By the time we were done with that it was break time. At break time we had snack and some people used the restroom and just talked a lot. Then after we finished break we did science. The whole time during science we worked on our big graph paper thing. By the time it was lunch most people were at least at the experiment part. So everyone went to lunch and ate a yummy lunch and then had recess.

After everyone came back from lunch and recess we did social studies. In social studies we learned how some of the people are now transforming into home builders. They are using clay/mud and drying it in the sun so they are rock hard. They would take those bricks and make homes. Then they started making pottery. That was a big deal because they were used for storage and for trading. Then we worked on a paper about what we were learning. So after we finished that we moved onto a story we read about a hero. His name was Nelson Mandela. He was born into a royal family in South Africa. His family had raised him to be a chief but he went his own way and became a lawyer. He was put into prison for life for protesting about more rights and freedom for black people. Then we talked about it for a while. After that we moved on to Bridge to Terabithia. Then Mr. Steele told us that we are going to read Hamlet. Then we would go see the actual play on December 2nd. Mr. Steele said that it was a great book. So we continued onto Bridge to Terabithia. Then when we were done reading it was time for jobs. So we did jobs and then did pack stack and vac. That was the end of our day.

Day 18 - Farmers

Welcome back from the weekend! This morning in class it was like every other morning. We came in unpacked, did calendar math, and went to specialist. We had PE today. In PE we did some tests. We did sit-up tests and the hang test. We did rotations and what we could do in each rotation was, sit up test, hang test, and basketball. We did rotations and everyone finished the tests and we got a lot done. So after we did that we went back up to our classroom. In class we did math and learned how to add and compare fractions. Mr. Steele showed us some good techniques to do those things. We actually learned a lot. By the time we were done with math it was break! So at break everyone chilled out and talked about many things.

Then we did science. We are moving onto the next section in science. Before we moved onto that we did one more final assessment test sort of thing. That is a part of our grade and it needs to be really nice and detailed. So everyone worked hard to get down the question, procedure, and variables. So then by the time we were done with that it was lunch time. So everyone went to recess then lunch.

When we came back to class we did social studies. In social studies we finished the first chapter. Then we moved onto the second chapter. In that chapter we learned about more of the Stone Age. We only read a little and then filled out a paper about how things we have now are way different from a while ago. Then we got a test on the story we recently read from Houghton Mifflin and that story was called, Passage to Freedom. In this story it talks about how a man who had some power helped the Jewish people during the war and when the Nazis were coming. Then when we were done with that test we put it on Mr. Steele’s desk and moved onto Bridge to Terabithia. What happened in this chapter was Leslie died. She went to Terabithia and swung across the rope and it broke. She fell and probably hit her head and drowned. Then Jess just was in denial and didn’t believe that she was dead. Once we finished reading we did some more of our story writing. We had to draw a picture about a memorable moment. After we did that it was job time. So we did jobs and then did pack stack and vac. That was the end of Monday!

Day 17 - Jag-a-thon

Ready for the weekend? I hope so because it’s coming up no matter what! So this morning in class we came in and unpacked. Then we went over homework and then worked on some math. In math we learned about how to do some new things. Some things like finding what is in between ¼ and 2/4 and it can’t be like 1.5/4. We didn’t have any specialist today so we did science early. In science we finished up some summaries we had started yesterday. There were about three summaries and if we didn’t finish those today we have them for homework tonight. Then about after an hour of working on the summaries and other things it was break time. At break we had snack and just hung out.

After break we did Language Arts. In language arts we finished up the packet we had for a story that we read yesterday. Most people finished that today. Then Mrs. Stairs (Principal) and Mr. B (Counselor) came in and showed us a video about the school rules. A few people in our class volunteered for the video and I think from other classes too. It was about lunch time now. Before we left Mr. Steele gave us each a paper and he told us that we will play some gym games sometimes. So we will either play flag football or a game like doctors in the battle field with Mr. Steele rules. So we went and played the game like doctors in the battle field all recess and then went to lunch.

So after lunch we came back to class and finished our social studies video from yesterday. We watched how they finished connecting the body and how long they had to work on it. They also showed that they can make it into a movie almost. A girl put on a black suit with detectors all over and there were 120 censers everywhere to detect her movements. Then they transformed her into a monkey on the computer using her actions. Then when the video was done we went to the Jag-a-thon assembly. At the assembly a speaker spoke about when, why, where we are doing the Jag-a-thon. We are doing it on October 8th. And we are doing it for fun, for funds, for fitness, and for prizes. And we are doing it on the upper field unless it rains. If it rains we will do it in the gym. Before we had gone to the assembly we went over some rules and they were,
-Clap for the appropriate length and sound
-Sit on your bottom
-We leave earlier and stay later to put away chairs later
So we did stay to put chairs away after and Mr. Steele showed us the right way to put them away. When we came back up to the classroom we did some more catch-up work until our job time. After jobs we did pack stack and vac. We did all that and it was time to go home for the weekend. Have a good weekend!
