Day 21 - Early Friday

This morning in class is basically a Friday because tomorrow is a long leap day for teachers so we don’t have school. So today we did calendar math and some new math today. This morning we didn’t have specialist. Instead of specialist we had computer lab. So we did math until 9:55. At 9:55 we went to the computer lab. In the computer lab we did more work on our Where I’m from poem. Then he showed us how to use our school email. Then we came back up to the classroom and had break.

In break we had snack and talked. Then we moved onto science. In science Mr. Steele put up a little cup of water and put something in it. We didn’t know what it was so he told us that he will tell us in a little. Then we got some cards that had pictures and the name of the picture. What we did with those was to label them. We either had to decide with our partner that it was living, non living, or undecided. So we did that and then Mr. Steele made three sections on the wall and those sections were each labeled living, nonliving, and undecided. As a class we decided which card goes where. Then we talked about the characteristics that a living thing must have. While we were doing that we had a lot of debates about what was and were not living. Then it was lunch time.

At lunch we ate food and talked and at recess boys played football and girls hung out and talked a lot. When we came back from social studies we did some more work on the Paleolithic times people. Then we did science and then it was the end of the day. So we did our jobs and did pack stack and vac.

Day 20 - Mr. Nash’s last day

Today in class we came in and unpacked. Then we did our daily math and word of the day. When everyone was almost done with calendar math it was 9:04 so we went down for music. In music Mrs. Frank had all of her xylophones and big instruments down. We got separated into two groups and we would play a song off of a paper she had. We did that and we sang the Battle Hymn of the republic and the grand old flag. Then we got to sing the Juanita Jaguars song. The song we haven’t sung in maybe a couple years. A few people did the drums to match the beat with the song. Then we came back up to the classroom. So when we got back Mr. Steele gave us a math test. It was homework last night to study some of the math so you were ready for today’s math check up. So we worked on that for about half an hour or more. Then Mr. Steele came around and collected the papers and then we did a stop light on the test. Then we made a transition from chapter two in our Bits and pieces book to chapter three.
The chapter was called moving between fractions and decimals. We talked about how we can do decimals and fractions and how they relate. Then it was break.

At break we had snack and talked a lot. Then we worked on some math papers with a partner. Then we got more time to work on the science again. So then after a while of working on that we had lunch.

Then we came back from lunch and recess. For the rest of the day we did the science because we had a lot to do. Then it was job time and pack stack and vac. That was the end of the day.

Day 19 - Pottery

This morning in class we came in and unpacked. Today we had PE at 9:04. At PE we did the end of the bike unit test. It was about a four page test. In the test it went over what we had learned during the bike unit. We corrected it together in PE and finished at about 9:50. So when we got back to the classroom Mr. Steele told us that we are going to do some group teaching. Mr. Nash took a part of the class and Mr. Steele took the other half. In those groups we did corrected our homework and then did some extra work on math. He said that we will do this a lot more often when Mr. Nash comes back. OH! I forgot to mention that tomorrow is Mr. Nash’s last day. :( So we are really sad about him leaving. But he will return in January. When he is back we will do a lot more double teaching and sometimes it will be just Mr. Nash teaching.

By the time we were done with that it was break time. At break time we had snack and some people used the restroom and just talked a lot. Then after we finished break we did science. The whole time during science we worked on our big graph paper thing. By the time it was lunch most people were at least at the experiment part. So everyone went to lunch and ate a yummy lunch and then had recess.

After everyone came back from lunch and recess we did social studies. In social studies we learned how some of the people are now transforming into home builders. They are using clay/mud and drying it in the sun so they are rock hard. They would take those bricks and make homes. Then they started making pottery. That was a big deal because they were used for storage and for trading. Then we worked on a paper about what we were learning. So after we finished that we moved onto a story we read about a hero. His name was Nelson Mandela. He was born into a royal family in South Africa. His family had raised him to be a chief but he went his own way and became a lawyer. He was put into prison for life for protesting about more rights and freedom for black people. Then we talked about it for a while. After that we moved on to Bridge to Terabithia. Then Mr. Steele told us that we are going to read Hamlet. Then we would go see the actual play on December 2nd. Mr. Steele said that it was a great book. So we continued onto Bridge to Terabithia. Then when we were done reading it was time for jobs. So we did jobs and then did pack stack and vac. That was the end of our day.

Day 18 - Farmers

Welcome back from the weekend! This morning in class it was like every other morning. We came in unpacked, did calendar math, and went to specialist. We had PE today. In PE we did some tests. We did sit-up tests and the hang test. We did rotations and what we could do in each rotation was, sit up test, hang test, and basketball. We did rotations and everyone finished the tests and we got a lot done. So after we did that we went back up to our classroom. In class we did math and learned how to add and compare fractions. Mr. Steele showed us some good techniques to do those things. We actually learned a lot. By the time we were done with math it was break! So at break everyone chilled out and talked about many things.

Then we did science. We are moving onto the next section in science. Before we moved onto that we did one more final assessment test sort of thing. That is a part of our grade and it needs to be really nice and detailed. So everyone worked hard to get down the question, procedure, and variables. So then by the time we were done with that it was lunch time. So everyone went to recess then lunch.

When we came back to class we did social studies. In social studies we finished the first chapter. Then we moved onto the second chapter. In that chapter we learned about more of the Stone Age. We only read a little and then filled out a paper about how things we have now are way different from a while ago. Then we got a test on the story we recently read from Houghton Mifflin and that story was called, Passage to Freedom. In this story it talks about how a man who had some power helped the Jewish people during the war and when the Nazis were coming. Then when we were done with that test we put it on Mr. Steele’s desk and moved onto Bridge to Terabithia. What happened in this chapter was Leslie died. She went to Terabithia and swung across the rope and it broke. She fell and probably hit her head and drowned. Then Jess just was in denial and didn’t believe that she was dead. Once we finished reading we did some more of our story writing. We had to draw a picture about a memorable moment. After we did that it was job time. So we did jobs and then did pack stack and vac. That was the end of Monday!

Day 17 - Jag-a-thon

Ready for the weekend? I hope so because it’s coming up no matter what! So this morning in class we came in and unpacked. Then we went over homework and then worked on some math. In math we learned about how to do some new things. Some things like finding what is in between ¼ and 2/4 and it can’t be like 1.5/4. We didn’t have any specialist today so we did science early. In science we finished up some summaries we had started yesterday. There were about three summaries and if we didn’t finish those today we have them for homework tonight. Then about after an hour of working on the summaries and other things it was break time. At break we had snack and just hung out.

After break we did Language Arts. In language arts we finished up the packet we had for a story that we read yesterday. Most people finished that today. Then Mrs. Stairs (Principal) and Mr. B (Counselor) came in and showed us a video about the school rules. A few people in our class volunteered for the video and I think from other classes too. It was about lunch time now. Before we left Mr. Steele gave us each a paper and he told us that we will play some gym games sometimes. So we will either play flag football or a game like doctors in the battle field with Mr. Steele rules. So we went and played the game like doctors in the battle field all recess and then went to lunch.

So after lunch we came back to class and finished our social studies video from yesterday. We watched how they finished connecting the body and how long they had to work on it. They also showed that they can make it into a movie almost. A girl put on a black suit with detectors all over and there were 120 censers everywhere to detect her movements. Then they transformed her into a monkey on the computer using her actions. Then when the video was done we went to the Jag-a-thon assembly. At the assembly a speaker spoke about when, why, where we are doing the Jag-a-thon. We are doing it on October 8th. And we are doing it for fun, for funds, for fitness, and for prizes. And we are doing it on the upper field unless it rains. If it rains we will do it in the gym. Before we had gone to the assembly we went over some rules and they were,
-Clap for the appropriate length and sound
-Sit on your bottom
-We leave earlier and stay later to put away chairs later
So we did stay to put chairs away after and Mr. Steele showed us the right way to put them away. When we came back up to the classroom we did some more catch-up work until our job time. After jobs we did pack stack and vac. We did all that and it was time to go home for the weekend. Have a good weekend!

Day 16 - Substitute

Today in class we had a substitute. Her name was Mrs. Chung. She is really nice so far. I bet it is hard for substitutes because they are at a whole different school and have to learn about everything that is in that school. She is very funny and she was learning how to use the active board. She is a fast learner on that! So we did math and went over homework. In math we copied down some things to help us and those were,
-How to find a fraction between two given fractions
-See that using smaller partitions will allow you to always find the fraction between others
So after that we went to the computer lab. In the computer lab we finished our Where I’m from poem. Only four or five people have finished so we are probably going one more time next week. Then we came back up to our classroom. When we came back to class we had break. At break we had snack and everyone was chatty. Then after break we talked to Mrs. Chung about fines. Yesterday Mr. Steele told us that any fines that are given will be doubled because we have a substitute. So we have been trying to be on our best behavior because we don’t want to go broke. So as we finished our talk about that we moved onto science. In science we did summary and conclusion writing. So we got two data tables and had to write a summary for each. Then we had to write a conclusion about those same data tables. Then it was lunch time. Today was very rainy so at recess most people were undercover. Most boys were playing football in the undercover area and the girls were just hanging. So after lunch we came back and did the end of the unit social studies quiz. So after that we did Houghton Mifflin. We read a story about man and his family who helped the Jews and wrote visas for them to get out of the country and away from the Nazis. We got a packet for that with about four pages to do. We will probably finish the packet tomorrow. So after that we watched a video about the discovery of the hominids. It showed where they went to search for the bones. Then it showed what bones they found and what they did to transfer them back to America. We watched the video until job time at 3:20. So we did our jobs and then it was 3:25 and we did pack stack and vac. That was the end of our day. Goodbye!

Today in class we came in and unpacked. Then at 9:04 we went to music. We practiced only one song today, the battle hymn of the republic. Then we finished our Bach video. When we got back to class we did math. We corrected our homework. Then it was break! So during break we opened the wall and everyone had snack and did a lot of talking. Then we worked on science. In science we worked on how to make graphs. On the paper we did yesterday we copied those into graphs. Then we talked about those for a little while. Then it was lunch!!! So today at lunch they served turkey gravy and mashed potatoes. Then when we came back from recess and lunch we did Bridge to Terabithia. In bridge to Terabithia it was after Easter and it was super rainy. So one day Leslie and Jess went to Terabithia that day. The water under the rope was really fast and high. Jess was afraid of it but he didn’t want to admit it to Leslie. Then we worked on some stories again. We wrote about a family member or someone who is special to you. Then we did jobs and pack stack and vac. That was the end of our short Wednesday.

Day 14 - Last day of the bike unit

We came into class today bright and happy! We did our calendar math and our word of the day. Then at 9:04 we lined up for PE. We went to PE and sat in our squad spots. Then we got our hairnets and put in our helmets. We went out and we got to ride on the upper field, do the rock dodge, snail race and do the figure eight. There was a new thing to do today. Instead of doing the car scan we did the group work thing. What you do is there are 4 lines with arrows to the end and then you are in a group and one person is the leader and they say, “Go!” And everyone has to get to the end at the same time. Today was the last day of the bike unit. Then after that we came back up to the classroom. What we did during that time was correct last night’s homework. Then it was break! Everyone was so hungry and they all had a good snack. Then after the ten minute break we worked on science. In science we talked about how to observe record and analyze data. So we learned about quantitative and qualitative. Quantitative means that it does include numbers and about the quantity and qualitative means that it doesn’t include a number and it’s about the quality something or someone has. Then it was recess and lunch time!!! So when we came back from lunch we had social studies! We finished the chapter about more modern humans (Homo sapiens, sapiens). What happened in this chapter was it showed how much the Homo sapiens, sapiens developed into modern humans. Some changes were they started wearing clothing, making paintings, building things, and being less hairy. Then we went outside to read Bridge to Terabithia again. In this chapter it was Easter. Jess’s dad got laid off right before Easter so Brenda and Ellie were upset and mad they couldn’t get new clothing. So one day Leslie came over and asked if she could go to church with Jess and his family. He said sure but he would have to ask his momma. So he did and she said she doesn’t want Leslie to come in pants and look sloppy but Leslie had told Jess she has lots of dresses. Then Leslie went to church with them. That was the first time ever for her. Then after church she said it was better than a movie. That was all that happened in that chapter. So after we came back from outside, we had some catch-up time. We could work on either, the hatchet quiz, pre-writing assessment, name art, social studies quiz, and our element. Once we finished all that, we just do some silent reading. Then we did that for the rest of the day. Then it was 3:20 so we did jobs. Then we did pack stack and vac at 3:25. That was the end of the day.

Day 13 - Bach

Welcome back! It’s the start of a new week! Today in class we had music at 9:04. In music we practiced the songs we are doing and those are Grand old flag, Star spangled banner, and battle hymn of the republic. Then after we practiced those a couple times we moved onto a Bach video. In the video a lot of things happened. So in the beginning it showed a boy and his mom was washing his hair. His dad was getting dressed into his fancy clothes and put his powdered wig on. Then the boy asked, “Father, do you remember what today is?” And his dad didn’t answer but his mother did. She said “Of course we didn’t forget. It’s your birthday!” So she handed him a present. He opened the present and wasn’t quite happy with what he got. It was a wig and dressy suit clothing with buckle shoes. His father took him to the duke to get a small job. The duke said he can be the assistant for the great organist, Bach. Over the time the boy was serving him they grew kinder to each other. After that Mrs. Frank said that we will finish it next music class on Wednesday. After that we came up to the classroom and did math. We did our daily math and then went over our homework from the weekend. This week is an even week so everyone with a red reading record would turn theirs in today. Then we worked on math until break. At break everyone talked and had snack. Then Mr. Steele gave us an appointment circle. An appointment circle is a circle that is basically a clock and it has 12 spaces and in each space it has to have someone’s name. Then when we need partners, Mr. Steele rolls a die and whatever number it lands on we have to go with that person and be partners. After break it was time for science. In science we worked on how to write a material list. We also had to correct some material lists that were messed up. After that it was lunch! So we went to lunch and recess. Then we came back and did social studies. We learned about how the Homo sapiens grew more human like and what characteristics they have grown to have. Then we read a few more paragraphs about that. Then after that we got to go outside and read Bridge to Terabithia. When we went outside it was very windy and cold. What happened today in our book was Jess and Leslie were playing a lot in Terabithia. Then one day at school they heard crying from the girl’s room so they went in and it was Janice Avery! Then we worked on our Hatchet story. We took a quiz on it and finished a definition paper. Then we wrote down some stuff about how to be a good writer. Then we wrote down our homework and did our jobs. Then it was 3:25 and we did pack stack and vac. Then it was time to go home. Have a good night!

Day 12 - Act it out!

It’s another Friday! Today we came in and did our word of the day and daily math. Then at 9:13 we went to library. At library we went into the computer lab and looked up some books. And we got to look at some of the books that were for the book fair. After that we had to go around the library and finish the library rule paper and a find a book thing. Then we got some checkout time. After that we came up to the classroom and did math. We learned some new stuff about fractions like how to break them down or build them up and even what to do with fractions that are higher than the denominator. Then we had break. After that we worked on our science and did a lot of stuff like fixing problems in experiments and made our own correct experiments. We had to choose an experiment and our choices were, “How long does a battery last?”, “What paper towel absorbs water best?” and “What laundry detergent gets a grass stain out?” Then we were able to work on our name art and our elements until lunch time. After lunch time we did banking. Mr. Steele talked to us about direct deposits and that means that if we want our money from our paychecks to go right to our bank account. After that we moved onto social studies. In social studies we did some more work on early hominids. Then we did an act-it-out. Everyone got a group and had to act out different characters. After that we moved onto Bridge to Terabithia. What happened today in the book was, it was Christmas time and all the kids are pretty selfish and greedy about what they get for Christmas. Jess had gotten Leslie a present and it was a puppy. And she got Jess, a paint set with a lot a thick paper. Then after it was time for our planners. So we filled those out and did our pack stack and vac. Then it was time to go and I hope everyone has a good weekend!

Day 11 - Australopithecus afarensis

This morning in class we entered and unpacked. We did our daily math and word of the day. Then we went over our homework. After we went over the math we did our name art until 9:50. At 9:50 we lined up for computer lab. At computer lab Mr. Steele showed us some stuff we did and didn’t know. He showed us how to make a border around our paper and how to make word art. We also learned some new buttons to use to make it easier for us. Then we got to play around with the new tools he showed us and then worked a little on our Where I’m from poem. Then we came back up to the classroom and did science. We went into groups of four and worked on some science questions about scientific predictions. Then we answered steps to experiments. Then we finished a partner work paper we were doing earlier today. Then it was lunch time! So everyone went to lunch and had a fun recess. Once we came back from lunch and recess we worked on our name art. We are trying to work on our name art so it is done for tonight at the curriculum night. Then we worked on social studies. We learned about early hominids and how they did things and the capabilities they had and we still have. Then Mr. Steele gave us a paper and it was called “The Philosophy of Mr. Steele’s Classroom”. We went over that paper and put a check next to it if we think we can do it. Then we worked on our name art. Mr. Steele chose 5 people to go down to the lunch room to help set up chairs for curriculum night. Now we had about a half hour left of school. During that half hour we worked on our name art, social studies quiz, and math test. Then at 3:20 we did our jobs and then did pack stack and vac at 3:25. Then at 3:30 we all went home and that was the end of our Thursday.

Day 10 - Money

This morning in class we unpacked and did our daily math and word of the day. Then we went to music at 9:04 am. At music we did a lot. We read a little about Bach and sang a couple songs. Those songs are The Star Spangled Banner and Grand old flag. Mrs. Frank gave us choir slips for if we want to join choir. She said it is $60 and if you can’t pay you can apply for a scholarship. Then we sang the Star Spangled Banner again and Mr. Steele came in and she said “You have a wonderful class! They sing so strong!” And then someone said, “That’s a compliment! You owe us money!” So Mr. Steele owed us $20. So then Mr. Steele took us back up to the classroom and gave us our money. He explained that when payday comes we are going to get $50. We can get raises by doing our job well. He showed us who we go to when we want to deposit money. Then we did a little bit of math and then went down to the computer lab. In the computer lab we learned how to do many new things. He showed us how to make shapes and how to color them in with different designs and textures. Then he let us play with that for a little. Then we came back up to the classroom and had break. We came back later than break so we got 4 minutes extra. Then after that we did science. For science we did an experiment with water and pennies. We had an eye dropper and a penny and we would drop drips onto the penny and see how many we could do before we break the bubble. Then it was recess time! So we went to recess. And then after lunch and recess we went back to our classroom. Then we finished up our science but instead of using a penny we used a nickel. And when we did that we found out that our results were more accurate. Then Mr. Steele told us that when we finished some questions about the nickel we could move onto name art and do that until the end of the day. Today is Wednesday and we get out at 2:00. Then after that we did our jobs then pack stack and vac. That was the end of our short Wednesday.

Day 09 - Barack Obama Speech

This morning was just like yesterdays morning. We went to PE at 9:04 again. During PE we got to ride the bikes on the upper field. We did the rock dodge, the snail race, the figure eight, and the car scan again. Then when we returned from PE we did our daily math and the word of the day. Then Mr. Steele said that we are going to watch a speech that Barack Obama was giving. It was a live speech. He talked about our education. He said that no one can write our destiny but ourselves. He said that when he was about a teenager he was a bit of a goof off. His grades were slipping and he wasn’t preparing himself for life. When you are a teenager they have a lot of questions about who they are and what they are going to do in life. He said that a good motto is “I achieve my goal and help others achieve theirs.” (By Tamara in Georgia) He said a lot of good quotes like, “If you work harder in school you get farther in life.” and “Luck doesn’t just come to you, you have to work for it.” Then talked about what you can do when you graduate college. You are able to do things like work for Microsoft, be a doctor, or a scientist, or even work for Google! Then we moved onto math. Mr. Nash taught us for a little while. We were using Pizza to find a percent and a fraction. Then we had break! After break we went over Monday night’s homework. Then we moved onto science. We worked on the changed variables, measured variables, and kept the same variables again like yesterday. We got a paper and we would have to guess what variable was wrong in the experiment. We worked on that with our partners. Then when time ran out we worked on it alone until it was done. Then Mr. Steele told us to work on our Pre-Assessment for writing. After about 30 min of working on that it was lunch time. Then after lunch we came back and instead of doing social studies we finished our pre- assessment. Mr. Steele told us that if you are done with the assessment we can work on our name art or our element. Then we moved onto our class reading. We read Bridge to Terabithia and wrote a small paragraph about what we think would happen next. Then we read one chapter and filled out another question. What we had to fill out was, “I wonder…” We talked about it for a while and then Mr. Steele told us that we get to watch the movie, Bridge to Terabithia when we finish the book. After that we moved onto our Houghton Mifflin. We are going to read Hatchet. Then we moved onto working on our Periodic Elements. Then it was 3:20 so we did our jobs and then at 3:25 we did pack stack and vac. Then we lined up and went home.

Day 08 - Variables

Today in class, we went to the PE at 9:04. We had the bike unit again. During the bike unit we had some of the same activities we did a few days ago. We had the car scan, the rock dodge, the snail race, and the figure eight. In the car scan we ride our bikes and the volunteer calls “SCAN!” and we turn around and say the number she put up. The rock dodge is where there are cones everywhere and you pretend they are rocks and you go through and try not to touch them. The snail race is a race where you try to be the last to the end. The figure eight is a big eight and you ride around in it and stop if the light is red and go if the light is green. Then we came back to class and did our daily math. After that we went over the weekend’s homework. Then we worked on some other questions in our Bits and Pieces book. Next we had break. Everyone always is talking and eating their snack. Then we moved onto science. We worked on different variables. There are changed variables, kept the same variables, and the measured variable. Then it was lunch. After lunch we social studies we did an assessment for social studies it was an open book assessment. Mr. Steele put some questions on the active board and we answered them. There was also a writing part of the assessment we had to write stuff about historians, archeologist, and geographers. After social studies we did rotate. Rotate is when you get put in a group then you get put in a certain rotation after the time of your rotation is up then you get put in another certain subject. The choices in the rotations were finishing up assessments + name art, Reading a story in our Houghton Mifflin books and awhile you are reading it you are completing a paper. The last subject is doing your periodic table of elements. The periodical table of elements is when you get assigned an element like iron, argon or aluminum and many more. The elements you get assigned on is based on your class number if you’re 18 then your argon. Then you have to do a sheet on it. You have to research on the computer about information on your element like the atomic weight. At 3:20 we have jobs that’s when every does their job. Each person is assigned a job and they do it if you don’t do your job good or you just don’t do it the teacher fires you and puts you in a new job. Day 07 - Friday

It’s Friday! Today in class we arrived and unpacked. We had library at 9:13. By the time we were in class it was 9:00 so we had about 10 or 15 minutes to do something. So what we did was our daily calendar math. At 9:13 we lined up. Then we got down to library and Mrs. Joseph gave us our computer passwords and we went to the computer lab. She showed us how to get to the library catalog. Then we made an account on the catalog so we can know what we did and didn’t return. Then we had a little bit of check out time. After that we went back up to the classroom. We went over the calendar math for the last time together and then we go solo. Next was break. Everyone hung out for a little while and then our time was up. Science came up next. Then while we did science a chair looked at Mr. Steele funny so he kicked it. Then it was time for social studies. We are going to do cave drawings. We can only use red, brown, black, and yellow. We only had about five minutes to work a little on that because recess and lunch was coming up. At recess boys were playing Danish Rounders. A couple girls joined them. Other girls were just hanging out and talking and some boys were playing war. At lunch the food was Pizza, Hamburgers, Cheeseburgers, Chicken burgers, and grilled cheese with soup. When we got back to the class we finished up our cavemen/cavewomen art. We have to draw things about what is very important to us. Like our family or our pets, or even food! Then we moved onto our class reading. We read Bridge to Terabithia in reading groups. An assignment that we had while we read was to find words and write down the page number and definition. Then after, we did our pre-assessment. We did that for a while and then got the choice to either work on our name art, our Where I’m from poem, or finish our pre-assessment. Then at 3:20 we had to do our jobs. Then at 3:25 we had to pack stack and vac. That was the end of our have a good weekend!

Day 06 - M&M’s

It’s the start of a new day! This morning we came into the classroom quietly and got to our seats. Everyone with a blue reading record turned it in for Mr. Steele to grade it. We kept our math in our desks to correct this morning. Then we did our daily math. When we were done with that we had some announcements. Those announcements were never put a normal battery in something that takes rechargeable batteries or else it will explode and acid will go everywhere. Mr. Steele taught us that as an important life lesson. Then we got our lunch helper schedules. Five people are chosen and the do lunch helpers for 4 weeks. Then after we were done working on that we went down to the computer lab. Mr. Steele showed us a few things about the computer and a new way of saving our documents. Then everybody got noisy, so we restarted the computers and lined up. Next time if we are not quiet we will have to start writing everything by hand instead of using the computer. So we came back up and started working on our poem and writing it by hand and making a draft. Then we got a science test. It isn’t going to be a graded/recorded test. It’s just to see where we are in science now. What was in the test was an experiment. The question was, “What liquid will melt the color off an M&M quicker?” And then we had to make a prediction, material list, and a procedure. Then we had break. The break is from 11:00-11:10. We have to be back in our seats by 11:10 or we get a fine if we are not. A few people were locked in Mrs. Malloy’s classroom. It was pretty funny because they had to sit on the floor and wait for Mr. Nash to go get them. Then when we came back we did science. We got a paper about experiments and what different things we can test on M&M’s. There were questions like, “Will an M&M melt faster in your mouth or in your hand?” Then people got all caught up in their science work they didn’t realize it was lunch! So the lunch helpers went at about 12:05 and everyone else left at 12:10. When everyone came back Mr. Steele had a “Technology Test” for us. We answered a lot of questions about what we have and don’t have in technology. Then we found out what periodic element we got. Most people had no clue what theirs was. Then we worked on our paper that we have for the periodic elements. Then we moved onto social studies. We had partners yesterday with the cave thing but now we are able to work independently. As soon as we finished that we read some of our Bridge to Terabithia. What has happened today in this book is, “Leslie and Jess are a lot better friends now. Also Leslie has won every race at recess.” After that Mr. Steele showed us pictures of him and his wife scuba diving in Maui. There were turtles and octopuses! It was amazing! Then we moved onto writing. We got a pre-writing assessment about what we did during our summer. Then we did our jobs and P.S.V. (Pack Stack Vac). Everyone had a great day I hope and we all went home for a good night!

Day 05 - Molecules

Today in class, we had music at 9:05 am. At music time we went into the lunchroom and not to the normal music room. The reason why was because we had a few people performing from band. They were in about 6th grade to high school. There were two girls and two boys. One of the girls played the flute and the other, a clarinet. One boy played a trumpet and the other boy a larger trumpet which I forgot the name of. The classes that came to the mini concert were our class, Mrs. Miera’s, and Mrs. Niggemeyer’s. The band showed us a couple different songs and how their instruments worked. After that they were done and we had a couple more minutes left of music. So to use those couple minutes up we answered some questions for the 5th graders. They asked us questions like, “Was doing the fundraiser for Outdoor ED worth it?” we answered yes for sure! Outdoor ED is a time where we “Learn in the wilderness”. We got to stay in cabins and learn a lot about the environment and the eco-system. You can only go once and that is in 5th grade. Next we came back up to our class. We did our everyday math. We worked on our arrays, daily variable, daily pattern, and our daily depositor. Mr. Steele showed us how to move a decimal. When we finished that we looked over our homework. Then we worked on some more math review. After about an hour of that we had break. Again for science Mr. Steele kept the wall open and we did science with Mrs. Malloy’s class. We learned about the Periodic Elements. Then we finished some of our scientific word definitions. For science we got a project. The project is about the Periodic Elements. We get assigned an element and we have to draw it and write down the information. Once everyone has turned theirs in, we connect them and make one BIG…. periodic table. We start those tomorrow. Next we had lunch and recess. Then when we returned from lunch we had social studies. There was a cave that we would get pictures and write hypotheses. We had a half day today and our day ended with planners and everyone going home.

Day 04 - States of Matter

During class today, we went to PE at 9:05. At PE we did the bike unit. Everyone was a little… big for the bikes. People’s knees would almost hit the handlebars! Activities we did during our PE time were, The Zigzag, Snail Race, and The Car Scan. The Zigzag is a squiggle line made out of chalk. With our bikes we follow the line. The snail race is a race where two or three people “race” to the end. But the goal is to not be the first to end. It’s to be the last. You need to be as slow as you can. The car scan is where we have one of the teacher/volunteers to tell us a signal and we do it. I think… After we returned from PE we found out what our new jobs were. Next we did our daily math. Then we worked on some “factor trees”. Our numbers we used were 72, 120, and 600. After some math it was 11:00 and we opened the wall for break. While our break was in session everyone was chatting and catching up on what has happened in class. Science came next. For science we kept the wall open and Mr. Steele taught both 6th grade classes. By the time science was done it was lunch time. At recess various people played various games and did different things. Some of those things are hanging out with friends, play sports, and tag. After recess our class came up and Mr. Steele said if you are not in your seat by 1:10 you are considered late and then Dominic (the fine master) will charge you a fine. Then we did art. We took a blank piece of paper and folded it portrait style. Then Mr. Steele showed us how to make our name all awesomeness and funky. During the time while we worked on our art he put on some… odd music. It was pretty cool and fun. Some sounded like a scary movie and some sounded like Indian flutes and another was from a video game called Zelda. Once we finished art we moved onto our class reading. Our book is Bridge to Terabithia. In our book a new character was introduced. Her name was Leslie Burke. While Mr. Nash or Mr. Steele read, if we hear a simile we shout simile and write it down on our simile paper. After we finished reading a couple chapters we wrote summaries about what we read. Then we discussed it after too. Then we worked on our “Where I’m from” poem. Mr. Steele showed us some examples of poems his past students made. Some were about grandmas and some about sushi! Now Mr. Steele let us have free time. Well sort of. It’s a catch up time. We can work on our, Where I’m from poem, name art, and once we are done we can read our Houghton Mifflin book. The story we would read would be Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. So I’m done typing until next time!

Day 03 - Name Art

Today, in class we went to library at 9:13 and we were writing a paper about the rules in the library and we were correcting the writing with Mrs. Joseph about the rules and the rules that we missed on our paper .Also in library we learned how to put a shelf marker and we talked about how to check out a book and how many books you can check out, when to bring them back. After library we went back to the classroom and we did math. We all started on our calendar math and we learned some new things like fractions and percents. Next we started on doing math pretest. Then we are talking about our class goals. Once we made class goals, we worked on class rules that would help us get to those goals. This is what we came up with:
1) R.E.A.D. - Be respectful, be accepting of others, be empathetic of others, be diligent and work hard
2) Etiquette – Follow Directions, stay on task, listen carefully, pay attention, be quiet when speaker talks.
3) Collaborate – Work with your team, help others in need, ask reasonable questions.
4) Responsibility - Be organized, be prepared, Come to school on time, do homework well
5) Achieve - Aim for the best, be the best you can be, do your best, don’t give up.
6) Positivity - Have fun, keep positive attitude, don’t give up
After lunch we worked on Where I am from poems. After the poems we worked on a fun activity in social studies where we pretended we were scientists 20,000 years from now. We discussed the Shakespeare play we will be reading soon and then read a chapter of bridge to Terabithia.

Day 02 - PE and more

This morning when we came in we unpacked and then went straight to P.E. we learned some safety tips on bike riding. When we came back we did some math and started calendar math. Then about an hour later we had a break instead of recess from 11 o’clock to 11:10. Then we started a read aloud book called Bridge to Terabithia. We read and then worked on what a book club will be like. Then we got a 35 minute recess and then lunch. After lunch we worked on Social Studies where we did some geography and learned about early humans. We then went to the computer lab and changed our passwords and got logged on for the first time this year. We returned to the classroom and started reading Hatchet in our books. At the end of the day we packed up and cleaned up.
